not sure if this has been done...thats really interesting tho. why go with a 4 cylinder?

i personally would shy away from going to a smaller engine. i drive a 2.3L 4 cylinder 5 speed ranger as a company truck and it has no power under a load. we put a log splitter on the trailer hitch and when driving up a hill we had to pump the clutch in 1st gear. its power is not impressive. i would stick to the v6.

but to answer your question, i believe the 2.3L out of a ranger will fit on your transmission.

thanks for the reply i commute 50 miles a day to work with my explorer the gas milage is around 20 with the factory tires (235/70/15) when i install my set of 35 inch tires i get an average of 17 (highway) that is the main reason, the power side of it i want to install a small turbo to compensate for the power loss.do you thing that ranger you drive has the mazda 5 speed in it an what year is it,thanks so much for the info.

The 2.3 won't bolt to your transmission. The bell housing pattern is different. The swap could be done but you will need a 4cyl transmission. If your needin better mileage why not just buy a 4cyl 2wd ranger or an escort or something that'll get 30 ya mpg? Could be interesting tho if ya do the swap.

It's a 1997 ranger. I'm sure it's a mazda trans because the 4 cylinder ranger and the mazda b2300 are the same truck.
Did you do a differential gear swap when you got your 35s? If not then you may just be able to swap in a set of lower gears rather then do a motor swap with custom turbo setup. For highway use some 4.56 gears would prob do nicely with some 35s. But doing 4.88 gears with 35s would put you at the closest ratio to stock tire and gear.

thanks a lot red ed,and as for 4pullinggm i need a 4 wheel drive lots of deep snow here in new york this past winter i had lots of fun in it

Cummins 4BT is an option, if you don't mind diesel.

so what would be my tranny options? the link said a t5 out of a chevy? I though fords had the t5's but I'm not familar with the trans. would rather have a overdrive auto for my application. so search box vans huh... anyother vehicles these are found in?

C5 is the ford transmission you are thinking of. A Tremec T5 is a Borg warner 5 speed transmission that was used in some fords and Chevy vehicles. The reason you want one from a Chevy is because then you have the Chevy small block bolt pattern, and it is cheap/easy to get an adapter plate.

They make adapter plates for ford and chevy V8 transmissions to a 4bt cummins. The bread trucks are pretty much the easiest place to find them, either that, or buy them on their own, but if you are lucky, you can pick up the van for less than someone is selling the engine for, pull the engine and transmission, and then scrap the body and make some money back.

i luv this swap and have heard of people building up these motors to make some good power.35-40 mpg WOW

This is exactly what iv'e been planning on doing this fall. Luckily, there is a large Frito-lay plant here in Orlando so it's pretty common to find the old P30 step vans.

i know this is old but its a 2.9 that bolts up not 2.3.he just needs gears not motor swap

Nope starter is on the wrong side. I bought a 5 speed from a ranger thinking it would fit. Nope.

Like JD said, the 2.9l , 4.0l OHV, and (to an extent) the 4.0l SOHC all share a common bolt pattern. They are all cologne engines.

;) most sohc trans have an extra bolt hole to fit the ohv also, one for sohc and one for ohv;)

Its the top right bolt that changes positions (as viewed from behind). Ford had to move it for timing chain clearance.

I have a 4r55e behind the "EEC-IV" SOHC in my '95. 7 out of 8 bolts works for me.

Yep been debating a 5r and obd 2 piggy back for mine so i can tune and have a strong stock auto trans, that or a 2.9 5 speed with obd2 manual ecm;)
