Well, theoretically you can. You need a cell USB modem. These can be had from ATT, Verizon, Tmobile, etc. However, be prepared to do trial and error (buy full price without a contract so you can return it at a longer time).
Some works some don't.
But I have to ask you this, the USB cell modems cost just the same as a cell-phone with WiFi hotspot capabilities.
Why would you buy a USB cell modem when you can buy a real cell phone with hotspot capability and make the MFT connect to your phone's WiFi?
Ford really botched this feature. What is needed is a built in cell-phone like OnStar, or the ability to tether to the cell-phone.
Oh wait, you can do that using the bluetooth connection, it allows the Ford 911 feature to work.
It's pretty cheap to buy a prepaid Virgin Mobile or other phone with data & hotspot feature and pay a low prepaid fee or pay as you go.
I went with ATT GoPhone, and a data package, cost me around $25 a month as I don't use the data much (just in case), without data package it costs $10 a month, or a pay as you go with some $0.10 a minute (that's 100 minutes for $10, and it rolls over). Plus you still have data (albeit slow 9600 bps using the EDGE data network without having to pay the $15 data package.
I use mine as a cheap but effective LoJack (Android with Google's Latitude feature beats LoJack anytime. Latitude sends breadcrumbs as it moves around). Plus it's my backup phone in case I forgot to charge my main phone's battery.
I'm thinking of using Verizon's service as it has coverage even in the boonies.
