I have a 1997 Explorer with a 4.0 engine. When I make a sharp turn a slow speeds I can feel the 4x4 system engage, the tires chirp or fight the turn. The trans guy says it due to tire size difference, but I have same tires all the way around. How does the 4x4 system engage, vacuum or electric signal?

When my '97 SOHC 4WD was new it would bind up during slow, sharp turns. Dash dial set to auto. Dealer updated the software once or twice and that fixed it. With the dash set to 4WD it will definitely bind up on dry pavement. If your system is like mine the transfer case is electrically controlled.
