Not everyone has incompetent dealer like you do.. mine came out perfect. Now whether it made a difference is something to be determined.

Completely agree. I'm only speaking of my personal experience. But still, I think the potential benefits of a "clean" execution of the TSB are not worth the risks of a botched execution. One little drop of the foam on something else and your screwed.....to each their own.

I agree. Don't have it done. Mine came out perfectly clean the only thing wrong, it did nothing to dampen the noise. So, what's the point?

Agree with ^ everything was perfectly done on my ex. Just it made no difference in the rain noise. Got my a pillars fixed and can really hear the rain now. Dont bother getting this done, or just expect no difference!

Have mine in today for this issue. Dealer is aware of the issue, but said Ford had the wrong part number on the TSB. He also said they have another Expolorer waiting on the repair, and didn't know if they would be able to do them. They are supposed to be waiting on word back from Ford.

Looking at my repair status online it shows as done. Under correction is says NPF. Not sure what that means, but have a feeling it was not fixed. Probably means No Problem Found.

Any word about the correct part number? My dealer told me the same thing. On a couple of other peoples, they had thought about using "Great Stuff", but wasn't sure on the expansion of it and possible staining.

It is one of the last (of many) correction items.

Thanks!

Never did get a part number. In fact, they ended subletting it out. This is all the info they said.

SUBLET TO JUNBUG - PERFORMED TSB 12-2-7... FIXED ROOF NOISE - DONE

Do not let them us anything other than the Fusor 121 that is listed in the TSB. "Great Stuff" and "DAP" are not meant for that type of application. The temperatures above the headliner between the sheet metal and headliner, especially sitting in the sun, cause those products to break down and liquify. You are only asking for trouble. I know personally.......

Those manufacturers have confirmed in writing not to use it for that specific application and Ford has also confirmed in writing not to use any other product other than the Fusor 121.

There is no "Ford" part number. The TSB simply states "Fusor 121 flexible foam repair kit"

TSB Headliner Update

Well I have decided not to continue to litigate as further litigation will end up costing me far more than a new headliner.
Instead I have decided to move into an Audi.
Just to make it clear… I feel I have been extremely patient through this whole mess and have given Ford and the dealership (Joel Confer Ford of Bellefonte PA) plenty of time to make this right.
If I were Joel Confer and Ford I would be ashamed about how this was handled.
I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and received a letter back from them.
Joel Confer Ford refuses to make this right and goes as far as to hint that I did the damage.
I am not going to put up with this. I have been a loyal for customer for years. I have included a list of the Ford vehicles I have owned and this list can be verified by Cory or anyone else at ford.
Ford Escort GT 1984
Ford Mustang GT 1987
Ford Super Coupe 1989
Ford F-150 1996
Ford F-150 1997
Ford F-150 1998
Ford F-150 1999
Ford F-150 Roush Edition 1999
Ford Explorer 2011
I am going to use every internet venue I can think of to explain to others how terrible this was handled.
I also blame Ford for this because if it were not for a faulty vehicle requiring the rain noise TSB neither I nor the dealership would be in this mess.
I work for a large mechanical company that predominantly buys Ford E-250 vans by the dozen. I have an influence in the buying decision and will do my best to see we purchase another brand.
In the long run this will cost Ford many many times the cost of fixing this headliner.

If anybody was curious about 2013's and the rain noise, I can confirm that it is no longer an issue.

We drove through pouring rain on our recent road trip that brought traffic to a stop on I-10 this past week. Big drops, little drops, sprinkles, and white-out, no matter the conditions, all that could be heard was normal rain noise. Now that I think about it, most of the rain noise I could hear was against the windshield. I didn't even think about the rain noise issue until jumping back on here when we got back, so I take that to mean that they fixed it :)

HDJulie & jfbk,

I wanted to check in with you; are you still having a concern?

Cory

I apologize for taking so long to get back to this thread. I had the Rain Noise TSB done (or I assume it was done - they kept my car for 3 days & when I got it back I had no smell or any other indicator it was done :) ). I asked for it because I hoped it would help with the bluetooth noise. It did not make any difference for me -- the bluetooth still sucks.

I find the Bluetooth to work 20 times better than our 2007 Camry Hybrid. People hear me clear as a bell. The first time I used it I forgot to turn off the climate fan and my wife said it sounded like I was n. a wind tunnel. Shut the fan off and she could not believe how clear it was. Using an iPhone 4 with the volume all the way up on the phone.

Well, turning off the climate control in Houston summer heat really isn't an option, and shouldn't be necessary, lol! But you said the 3rd quarter update tries to address this issue?

Thanks :)

Has your dealer taken care of your concerns, cnsheets? Please let me know; I have your VIN from previous messages, so please forward your approximate mileage and I’ll lend a hand.

Can the fix be done to moonroof cars?
The TSB does not say that it is limited only to non moonroof vehicles, so yes, it applies to all.
I have a moonroof and had arranged to have the TSB done with my last oil change but asked them to hold off while I rethink this through some more...
I see Peter already jumped on that question, davek4.

Thanks for helping, Peter! :) Have you put in some more thought on getting it done?

It’s great that yours came out perfect, blwnsmoke. Please keep us in the loop with the change.

gpzrider & jeff59rt1,

Have you talked to the dealer about still having the noise? I have your details from before; drop me a line with your current mileages and I’ll arrange follow-up calls.

HDJulie,

I suggest letting your dealer check on this. I can help by forwarding the details to your regional Customer Service Manager. For me to do this, please send a PM with your contact information, VIN, approximate mileage, and dealer name/state.

I appreciate you sharing that, RonJrSVCMGR.

VinceL,

That sounds like an easy way to turn your ride into a sauna. I don’t recommend it.

I am in the same boat.

Hi Guys my 2012 Explorer Limited w/dual sunroofs has the tin can sound when driving in the rain too, it's really loudest at top of front windshield. I would think a piece of sound mat would do the trick. Is there any help from Ford?

If you check the 'sticky' on TSB's at the beginning of this Forum, you will see that there is a Technical Services Bulletin on this issue and what it calls for.
I have the same noise but so far have decided against having anything done about it. If you read through this thread you will see that some have had the work done with no change in the noise and others have had it done with all kinds of problems. That is why I cancelled my appontment to have the TSB carried out a while ago.

I had mine taken care of a couple months ago, and they used the Fusor 121 spray foam ("they" was the company that they sublet the work to). The rain noise has been reduced significantly, and I have noticed no issues with how the headliner was taken down/replaced.

I'm happy to hear that you had some luck in getting the noise reduced. You are one of the very few that has noticed a noise reduction.
As for the headliner, if they followed the TSB instructions, there would have been no need to remove it. From my understanding in reading the TSB, access to the area is gained by removing the sun visor and inserting a nozzle throught the sun visor mounting cup.

I went to the Ford Dealer in The Dalles, Oregon where I bought the car. They followed the TSB and injected foam through the sunshade holes in the headliner. Slick. They never removed the headliner. Ping-ping noise is gone replaced by silence in the rain. Highly recommend everyone take their Explorer to the dealership and have them perform the TSB.
