I have a 2002 Explorer (Eddie Bauer V8) edition that I recently inherited. It has 45,000 miles on it. I had the transmission fluid changed per
recommendation of everyone in this newsgroup. So far, no issues with the transmission. If I change the fluid every year, will that prevent transmission problems or will it eventually need repair regardless of maintenance. I had a transmission specialist change the fluid and he said that the old fluid "looked" okay.

Frequent fluid and filter changes improve the odds of a long transmission life a great deal. I have never had to rebuild an automatic transmission on any vehicle I have owned where I bought it with less than 60k miles and changed the transmission fluid and filter every 30k-40k miles. Some of these vehicles were driven to 150k to 200k miles.

Fluid changes. Band adjustments.

Some things are prone to failure regardless of fresh fluid, servo bores and separator plate gaskets are usually a matter of time.
