2006 Explorer Limited, dealer says I need a new "tone ring". They replaced entire rear axle shaft assembly, sensor and shaft kit. Total about $500 in parts and $210 in labor.

I think that I may have gotten the shaft! It is my understanding that the tone ring is a relative inexpensive part and the total parts and labor should be in the neighborhood of $300.

It seems to me that they did not need to replace the entire assembly.

Comments and advice?

Thanks!

Who said that the tone ring is a relative inexpensive part and the total parts and labor should be in the neighborhood of $300?

Just curious who the point of reference is coming from...

Ford Parts online list the part at $26.13, part # 2C182. Also, go to www.therangerstation.com where they have step by step instructions for the process of changing the tone ring. Main thing is to heat the ring and clean the old area where the ring is seated.
