Mounting / Wiring Radar Detector

Wiring/Mounting options for radar detector?

5 months into my 2013 Sport I got a speeding ticket on the way to work by a motorcycle cop radaring from the street corner....

I do 90% city driving, but have still been considering a radar detector.

I have read up on some hard wiring options, but I am leasing my Sport and don't want to be cutting, splicing, etc. when I shouldn't be.

I guess my only option is plugging it in the media tray. My lid doesn't have the cable cutout though so I'm wondering if the lid will still close when in use?

Anyone out there have a detector hooked up the "normal" way? If so, do you have pics?

Thanks,

Here are some pictures of the rearview mirror, not much clearance behind the mirror and not sure if the blendmount will fit.

Which blendmount did they tell you to buy for your mirror with the camera?

I have a V1 and just installed the blendmount and was trying to hardwire the power adapter I purchased.

It's an 8" cord with 2 prongs on the end. I believe they are supposed to be plugged into the power connector thats going into the rearview mirror.

Anyone know how/where it gets plugged in specifically?

I was having some trouble getting the prongs into the molex connector going into the mirror, so I popped off the light/moon roof control panel and found a spot that seems to fit much better. I can then just run the wire out the front along with the wire going to the mirror.

Unfortunately the cable i had originally ordered was 8" and it was not long enough so I had to order a 12".

My 2013 Ex has the lane departure camera and the auto dim mirror has no cables running to it. I could not figure out how to get the camera covers off, so I decided to find power from another source.

I didn't like the map light option, because the detector would be turning on every time the door opened and stay on until the light timeout. So I opted for the moonroof control.
I was able to slip some Ferrules connectors (just little metal crimp connector rods) into the moonroof connector. No cutting, splicing, or damage to factory wiring.

Funny, my first attempt I attached it to the wrong wire, when I turned the dector on the moonroof started opening...

After finding the correct wire works perfectly.

Looks great and cost me nothing (because I had the Ferrules).
Here is a link to the ferruels as an example: http://www.panduit.com/wcs/Satellite?c=Page&childpagename=Panduit_Global%2FPG_Layout&cid=1345564329095&packedargs=classification_id%3D2198%26locale%3Den_us&pagename=PG_Wrapper#1

I did not note the moonroof wires I connected to, but if anyone needs them, I can pop out the map light quickly and snap a picture.

Great forum, look forward to contributing more.

Jeff

Mirror power for radar detector

I have a 2012 Limited Explorer. I hard wired a Escort radar detector into the rear view mirror power. When I initially did this the mirror supplied 12+ volts of power all the time and the detector works perfectly. Now, several months later the detector stops working intermittently. It seems to not work when you first turn on the car and will turn on several miles later or if you turn the car off and back on. I took a voltage reading when it is not working the power drops to approx. 10 volts. Any ideas why?

We have 9500's that are wired into the mirror on both our rx8 and sport. I have noticed some times that the unit will power off for some odd reason (usually a low voltage state during turn on that is rectified by unplug replug and power on) which is not limited to the sport. Doesn't happen very often. I haven't done any voltage readings since it was plugged in however but I doubt the above and your situation are the same. Which pinouts did you use on the back of the mirror and I will compare ours?

The blue/gray for power and the black for ground.

Not using those on our 14 sport. Using the far right top and bottom pinouts if looking from the rear. Our detector turns on and off with the start of the vehicle.

The far right bottom is the blue/gray wire I am using. The top is a Blue/white wire, if that is what you are using it must be a ground. Not sure if moving the ground wire would help or not. This worked perfectly for several months that way it is, just recently stopped started acting up.

I was given an S Cobra radar detector for Christmas...where's the best installation location? The windshield or the dash board??? g

Now that I have moved your post here, perhaps if you read through this thread, it may help you decide.

velcro

Not in Texas but it's generally a good idea to hide your radar detector if you get pulled over. I have talked to cops before that said that they would have just given a warning numerous times if it wasn't for the presence of a radar detector :(

I think until I get used to my Cobra ESD 9270, I'm just going to velcro it to the top of the dash and play with it before I start wiring. My Cobra (a gift) doesn't rank very well anyway when compared to the Valentines and Belco's. Also, if I was a cop I would ticket you if I saw the detector permanently mounted. With Velcro, I can rip it off the dash and hide it quickly in the console...that's my 2 cents worth on this subject. g

Would somebody be able to take a snapshot of the connected wires that are working?

Sorry to be dyslexic, but this far right top and bottom from rear description has got me confused. Is the black wire the ground?

A picture here would be worth a thousand words.

Thanks!
:)

radar detector concealed wiring to fusebox or battery instructions

I am trying to set a place for the Escort 9500ix radar detector under and in front of the rear view mirror. What I am looknig for are instructions on how to connect the wiring that travels from either the battery or the fuse box to the location where the radar detector will be placed.
thanks.

I tapped the wiring for the overhead console lights right above where you're mounting. There is a 12v accessory there if you use a multimeter you should be able to find it... if not I can give you the colors from my '13 sport (no sun roof).

As indicated in my PM, I have merged your thread with this one. I think you may find your answer here,

Here is another option for those who don't want to pay a lot for a simple wiring job. Go to ebay and search your brand and model and include mirror wire.
I just bought mine there for my escort 8500 and received it in 3 days!

Here is the website:
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odk...r+wire&_nkw=escort+radar+mirror+wire&_sacat=0

Cost me $8.95 and has a fuse built in it. Took me 5 min to install. Turns on right when i start the car.

When you pull the cable out of the back of the mirror you will see 3 wires. One black and two blue/white.
Black is ground. you want to choose the bottom blue/white wire which gives you the 12v supply.

hope this helps

whoops...a troopers opinion of radar detectors

I got stopped the other day at 15 seconds past the 5pm deadline for slowing down in a designated Wildlife area. I was doing 8mph over when I had my cruise control set at over 3 over. That's a $360 fine here in Colorado. The officeer let me off though and when 5/8ths was rumaging through the glove box for our registration, she brought out our radar detector and placed it in her lap. He went livid then and told us to throw it out, cause even if stopped for a tail light out, we would be fined for sure. The detectors detect habitual speeders and are treated without mercy he said. I offered it to him to dispose of, but he told me to through it in the trash after we got home!! I did.
