Extended Service Plan (ESP) prices comparison thread

Welcome to the Forum cazzy.:wavey:
I bought a Ford ESP from my dealer for $1175. It is a 48 month 80k km (50k miles) leasecare warranty with rental and no deductible. The prices here are much higher than in the U.S.
If you do an Advanced Search on 'ESP' you will find several threads on the subject, Here is one of the most viewed;

I took out the ESP in part due to all the electronics systems on board the Ex.
Yours looks a lot like mine except you don't have the dual panel moonroof.
Happ motoring.

Peter

Yeah...the multitude of electronics is what's leaning me that way too. I'll check that thread out...thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I have never been too fond of sun roofs (never use them) so I left it off te build sheet.

Got the Eco Boost, 303A, 20" polished, 2nd row bucket and front sensors. Going to install a Alpine drop down for the kids in a few weeks and maybe some sound dampening.

Totally in love so far! :)

I have a 2011 Explorer XLT with 37000 miles on it. It was an early build 10/10. It has been back to Ford dealers 19 times since then. Ford gave me at no cost an extended warranty to 60000 miles because of all my problems. If not for that I would have dumped it before the factory warranty was up. For now, everything works, hooray it only took 20 months for that to happen. Still like the vehicle and may buy a 2014. Lesson #1. never buy a new model in its first week of production!

Wow! Quite a journey you've been through! Wouldn't that have qualified for the lemon law?

Awesome you still like it after all that though. I can honestly say that I've been a tad concerned post purchase after I've read some of the threads here. I just hope that they've worked out some of the kinks on the assembly line.

Been there done that 20 years ago with the lemon law. It might sound crazy but, I still love the vehicle. My friend who worked on the Ford assembly line for 20+ years told me to wait and I didn't. He has a 2013 and has had zero problems. I've had 13 new Fords in my lifetime and probably still will buy another one. :)

Extended Warranty

If you decide to get the EW, AVOID anything provided by Warranty Direct like the plague! They are a scam and will do anything to not have to pay your bill.

I would strongly recommend the extended warranty for owners of the '11 and '12 model. "Word on the street" is that the '13 is a MUCH better vehicle so I would probably not spend the money. Having it on mine has certainly been useful as I have had about 14 days of rental/loaner car covered and I suspect I will begin having suspension wear/failure issues due to the vibration problem in mine. It is already picking up rattles from interior pieces.

Extended warranty

Because of some of the issues that seem to be coming up, I have been thinking of getting an extended warranty. Does anyone know of the different companies that offer? I would like to still take my vehicle to dealer for any issues down the line.

Don't let the stuff you read about online scare you. Your chances of coming out ahead on any "Extended Warranty" are very small.
Extended warranty is probably one of Fords biggest revenue generators. I think you would be ahead to put that money toward your next new car when the warranty is gone on your current car.

Although they are called warranties, they are actually an insurance policy you purchase in case something "catastrophic" occurs to your vehicle. The firms have researched this and sell these at a significant profit based on repair histories.

Many people want them for peace of mind, and are willing to pay the prices charged. Me, I would rather hang on to my money, and in the very slim chance that I have something go bad, I'll either pay for it, or sell the car.

Remember, they are getting your money up front, and have the use of this money until the "warranty" actually kicks in which is generally many months down the road.

Make your decision and purchase wisely!

Yes they are insurance policies however how many people buy insurance on their car and never have an accident? I've had insurance on all my vehicles and in the 18 years, have never been in an "at fault" accident. A lot of money gone to waste.

With the 0% financing, I'd rather pay $90 a month for 18 months and know for the 6 years I'll have this vehicle, I will not have a repair bill (except maintenance). My feeling is this.. I do not want a repair bill while i have a car loan payment. Once the payment is over with, I can bank that money on future repairs.

On the $1,700 cost, I've recouped about $900 (including rental fees which I would need if my vehicle was in for repair) in 39 months/68,000 miles. i'm half way to the expiration (6yr/125k).

It is all a personal preference in how one feels.

Let's say you need to replace the MFT module, replace a seat warmer, and repair the keyless door system after the basic 3 year warranty is up, but within, say, 6 years on an extended warranty. Wouldn't the cost of just those repairs exceed the $1500 or so that a 6 year warranty would cost? I bet it would, and I bet those items will break within 6 years.

If that were the case, Ford would be losing money on their ESP's.

Believe me, they are making a lot of money on them and the odds of all not happening are in Ford's favor.

Could that happen to a small percentage of drivers? Sure. That why ESP is a roll of dice where most will lose.

This makes some sense to me. If you are on a budget with all your money accounted for - inclusive of how much you want to save, there is something to be said for the above argument.

The odds are still against spending the full cost of an ESP, but if you are concerned about a budget getting bent, there is sense to that.

I always buy used and pay cash (vehicles coming off lease with a few months left on the original warranty for piece of mind). I have money put aside for any big repairs that *may* happen, but over the past 20 years I am far ahead not having bought extended warranties.

It's really hard to reason with people when it comes to extended warranties. Most folks don't understand the present and future value of money, or the fact that Ford, or whomever is offering these policies, is not out to lose money. Just like they keep thinking, if I go to that casino long enough, I'm bound to come out ahead!

If these cars were so bad that everyone needed major repairs, I seriously doubt anyone would be buying them. Also, a lot of vehicle problems are due to neglect and lack of owner maintenance, and a lot of things you think will be covered in your policy are not going to be when it comes time to file a claim. "Caveat Emptor"

Does anyone know the invoice prices on the ESP plans? I want to be armed with information when I'm facing my dealer. I'm looking to purchase a 7-yr, 100,000 mile plan with $50 deductable, first day rental. Looking at blwnsmoke's price for a 125,000 plan, I'm guessing it should be $200-$300 less.

Also, any real value in the service plans? After looking at the owners manual, there's not a lot to be done on the Ex's.

Here are some important facts about the ESP:

-The dealer cost for a FORD ESP is about 50% of the retail price.

-Purchase the ESP within the first 12 months or 12,000 miles to avoid paying an extra surcharge.

-Some dealers will try to sell you a non-Ford ESP, while claiming that it is just as good as Ford's ESP. The dealer can make more commission on non-Ford ESPs.

-Always get the Ford PREMIUM ESP.

-You can save some money by purchasing the Ford ESP in stages. You can get an initial ESP with a 60,000 mile term, then before reaching 60,000 miles you can extend it to 75,000 miles. This can be done in stages up to 125,000 miles I believe. The key to keeping the costs low is to extend the plan each time before reaching each of the year/mileage milestones.

Also, a lot of vehicle problems are due to neglect and lack of owner maintenance

This is a big one. I am extremely meticulous on how I take care of my cars - as well as how I drive them. This goes a long ways to not having unneeded repairs.

People who never change the oil or other fluids and don't listen to and jump on warning signs/sounds early might be better off with an ESP, but are you still covered if you don't keep up regular maintenance?

We just purchased our CPO Ford Explorer XLT Monday. After reading the many horror stories with the Sync system we decided to purchase the Premium ESP with the vehicle. I was reading different articles online and read something about the CPO warranty. From what I can tell it covers a lot of what the ESP does for the 12m/12,000mi. Is there any reason for me to keep the ESP the first year since I have the CPO warranty?

How many miles are on it? You said the"Sync system", if it has My Ford Touch(Touch screen) it's under warranty for 5 years(from original in service date) unlimited miles.

62921. It does have the My Ford Touch System. So that coverage for 5 years covers all components that the MFT works with? If the system stopped controlling the AC or the touch buttons below the screen stopped; items like that?

Having just purchased the ESP for $2395 with the cost financed into the vehicle, if I cancel the policy that balance will just go to the lender; can anyone verify/clarify that for me?

It almost sounds as if I don't need that ESP right now...so aggravated. This is what I get for buying a used vehicle on a Monday night lol.
