supercharged 5.0 true fire 98 explorer sport

hi everyone, my name is tim . i live in selkirk, manitoba, canada and as if this date that i am posting this, i am 36 years old.

i bought my sport in jan 05 from a local ford dealer. it had 111,000KM's on it. this is the second sport i have owned. it was sitting on the lot for about 8 months before i came along. i am the third owner (i was able to track down the person that traded it in, and they got it from a friend, who bought it new in 98).

i started to do a few things to it after i first got it, then i found this site, and all hell broke lose! i've never been satisfied with something the everyone else has, so i started to tinker with it even more.

is the feature truck on the fun hump day radio show (starts roughly around the 30 min mark)

http://explorerforum.podbean.com/2011/03/23/19-vroom-zoomboom/

and you drive 26 hours ONE WAY to the carlisle all ford nationals in june 2010 and 2011, and grab second place in the s.u.v. all category!

scan00012.jpg

then in 2014 you go back to the same show you have been to 5 years in a row (nothing by most, but its one hell of a long drive) and take first!

started talking some stuff off it tonight. that and trying to figure out how to clean the block without using water, or a butt load of brake clean. looks like i will be using a butt load of brake clean (while loosing a few brain cells from both the fumes from it, and my propane heater in my shed).
i was also ear to ear grin to find out that i dont have to get a blancer made, but only have to change the pulley if i want. i think i may do that, but i have to find a 8 rib. or have one made up.

and this folks is what a rare cobra pulley looks like.

The weather is supposed to be right around freezing this weekend.
Maybe load it up, take it to a wand car wash, engine cleaner, spray clean, and bring home?

I'd hope 3 guys could man handle the motor in and out of your truck a few times. I'm able to help.

ordered parts from summit yesterday. have a COMP Cams Nitrous HP Camshafts 35-556-8 (http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/cam-specs/Details.aspx?csid=1063&sb=2) coming for it, as well as lifters. i also figured the motor mounts on both the 302 and the 347 will be close to there expiration date due to the torque and shaking they have been put threw the last few years as well, so they to will be replaced. i also have a AEM meth kit sitting on the shelf as well for it. i was going to replace the oil pump on the 347 (its always been a golden rule of mine. if the motor is out, replace the pump) but with the low miles on it, it will stay put.....or until i start loosing sleep on it, it will stay put.
i also have another thing that is making me scratch my head. i was bugging 2000StreetRod on what crank pulley size i should use. with using a 7 1/2 (was told that was the biggest pulley i can put on there) and the 2.8 pulley on the m112, i "should" make around 8 1/2 pounds of boost. i will have to settle for that. but, now that the crank is over driven, so will the alt, power steering, and water pump. that combined with going or want to go 8 rib, this may be a challenge. ahodges i and i have been talking about trying to do this change over the last few months and also trying to find any trucks/cars that have a 8 rib setup (besides the cobra cars). i had seen someone drag a 2000ish 4 door f150 into work last week, and asked one of the guys to set it aside so i can look at it. good news, it has a 5.4 with a 8 rib. bad news, the power steering is a press on, not a bolt on. im going to get one of the loaders to rip the front of the truck off it so i can get a better look at it, and see what can be used (fingers crossed).
todays project if i have time is finish cleaning the 347 up, mask and paint the block so it will be ready when the cam gets here, and some of the parts i sent to Turdle for beautification.

pulleys

When going with the bigger Overdrive pulley on the crank, I would suggest going with underdrive pulleys on the other rotating parts except the supercharger of course. But then finding them with 8 ribs could make it impossible.
I cant wait to see all the beautified parts!!!

The Super Duty trucks have 8-ribbed pulleys. The alternator and AC pulleys will be easy to find, other than the size choices. I bought a spare AC compressor ages ago(eBay), and asked for the 8-rib pulley for it, no charge for that. The WP pulley you may have to go to ASP to see if they will make one in a different size(the stock one may or may not be wide enough for the 8-rib belt).

todays task at hand was......

267.jpg

356.jpg

448.jpg

534.jpg

624.jpg

get my shed hot enough to make paint stick. for most this isnt a real problem, but when its -10C, and part of it is just like a tent and all you have is a propane heater it sometime can be a challenge. now that the block is de skuzed i sit back and wait for parts to roll in.

Paint

That's a nice color blue, what type/brand of paint did you use?
Looking Good!

i like my blue blocks. the color i used to have on my capri motor was svo blue. it was a real dark blue. almost navy blue, but its no longer made. this is just run of the mill dupi ford blue if you can believe it. same color as the 302 in the truck is now. i was almost tempted to paint the heads as well to hide the fact they are alum, but this is the first, and probably the only motor i will ever have with aftermarket heads, so yea. i will show that off a little.

That looks very good, that's the best "medium" Ford blue. There were at least three OEM Ford blues, and the other two are not that good. Dale's medium blue is close and still good, the real light blue is very pale, from old 60's and back cars.

How did that black paint hold up since you got a good look at it? The question of paint quality came up recently on SBFtech, and that black is what Woody uses on all of his engines unless asked to do something else. I think it is VHT but I've forgotten(that's the brand I used to use the most).

BTW, you can use a hair dryer to heat some things that you need to have some temperature in them for painting.

Looks Nice! I used a High Heat blue on my calipers that looks very similiar to it. I think it was VHT. I have had good luck with their products. VHT is a division of Duplicolor, which is a Sherwin-Williams Company. Have spoken with their customer service a few times and they were always helpful. (end of un-paid plug)....

Back on topic-

Still absolutely blown away with what you have done and keep doing with Evil!!!!

as i said its no special color. matter of fact, i am almost positive its the same can i spayed the 302 with......almost

just the flash may make it look different (pic of the 302 was with a camera, pic of the 347 was my iphone). if i had my way, this would be the blue i would have used

those are pics of the old 351w i had in my capri back in the day. i cant find that color anymore. i know when i bought it, i had to get it from the ford dealer i worked at. nobody else had it.
as for using a hair dryer, that wouldnt work. you would only be heating spots up, and not the entire block up evenly. as for the black, well it did have age on it. that and you have to remember when brad had it in his truck, it was a DD. meaning it went threw snow, slush, salt, dirt and water. there were spots it flaked off from, and spots it held up fine. its to be expected. another reason why i dont like black is its hard to spot leaks. if you have a leak its almost impossible to see unless you toss some dye in the oil and put a black light on it. GRNMACHINE, one day i may make it to your place when i go to AFN. not sure how many more trips i will make to it however, but i am sure i will go again someday.
jon, thanks. i cant wait to see what it looks like when you get done with the parts.
oh yea, dont get any funny ideas when you see that intake :D. don told me he had tmoss port it. take a look at the runners of that thing when you get it.

http://tmossporting.0catch.com/

That last one looks like the proper Dark Ford Blue, which was easy to get in the early 80's. I couldn't find the medium blue then, and I used that on my first three Cleveland engines. It's almost purple.

Tom Moss does great work porting intakes, and flow testing them. I had him weld and port my spare lower, which Jon coated long ago. I plan to use it finally for a 306 in my 99 Explorer. It should do well for a 6000rpm engine with the right compression and heads etc.

Tim how did the intake gaskets look upon removal?

the gaskets themselves looked good brad, but it looked like there was coolant leaked into the #1 and #5 intake runner in the heads at one time (i think i even showed don that as well). i just ran out to the shed to look, but since i have had the intake off, and plugged the runners up, i must have wiped any residue off. if it happens again, i wont be able to tell because the meth kit will clean anything in the top of the motor away.
i think, and this is just a theory, what might have been happening was because the way the motor would shake, it would shake the bolts out of torque. now the reason why i say that is, i found a bunch of loose valve cover bolts, and few that were finger tight, and one that was almost backed completely out. same with the pan bolts, some were pretty loose, but not as bad as the valve covers.
btw brad, i saw the comment about the remote. no biggie, thanks for taking a second look.

Looking great Tim! That cam is very close to mine. You have more intake lift, your exhaust lift is slightly less with slightly more duration. There seems to be a more significant difference with the valve timing between yours and mine. My part # is: 35-312-8. - say good by to your nice and quiet valve train! I'm betting yours will sound more like mine now (you can hear them "working").

If you don't break into the low 13's I'd be very surprised!

It looks great Tim! I hope to see her in person this June!

Andy, I thought they would be close. That was the cam comp cams recommend I should use. I know the valve train was a bit on the loud side with the cam that was in it. As for low 13's I guess we will all have to wait and see. I know the suspension will need more if that is the case. That and I wounder how much more louder the truck will be period. My ears where ringing when I go back this year, but had to replace the muffler (under warranty thank god) because it broke one outlet tube and spilt around the back of it. The new one is not as bad, but still up there
Josh, once again, no promises about getting back to AFN this year. Last year went a little to overboard with parts (now that I know where summit retail is in Ohio I would probably stop there again to) and fuel cost. But I say that every year, and even reserved a room last night "just in case" lol.
