2004 explorer xls
We recently purchased a 2004 ford explorer xls. When we purchased the vehicle the gentlemen told us that the serpentine belt squeaked a little because a mechanic split some power steering fluid on the belt when it got changed out. My fiancée changed out the belt the next day & change the tensioner pulley. He made sure it was lined back up correctly and all, but driving a day or 2 later one of the threads on the serpentine belt ( side of the belt closest to the engine) ripped off. He changed out the belt once again & the same thing happened. He has changed out the belt numerous times, as it has done the same thing to each belt. Is it possible it the harmonic balancer? He has says the balancer isn't moving back & forth. What else could it be?

Sounds like one of the pulleys is out of alignment. A careful inspection ought to reveal where the problem is. If that doesn't show anything, take the belt off and check each pulley individually for any play. The harmonic balancer is certainly one possibility there.

My fiancée said after he watched some videos tonight that the harmonic balancer on our suv has separated. Thank you for your help and insight!
