Lol. Thermostat housing is probably cracked or the rad tanks are shot. Pretty common among many many other failures on these things. Hope you have a stocked tool box. Welcome to ford.

you should get your mommy to buy you a chevy, cry baby

Haha I hope that's all it is at this point! My last car was a 15 year old Ford Ka, it cost $300 and looked like crap but had a solid engine. That car could be fixed with tape, I would do anything to get it back right now.
Yeah, the 4.0 is a pretty failure prone. The timing setup is absolute garbage. Had I done a little more research before I bought mine I wouldn't have. Although the Ranger I ordered from the factory that this one replaced had the same engine, My guess is I just didn't have enough mileage on that for it to start breaking down. It seemed to have more transmission issues. It was in the shop 5 times in 600000 kms for slave cylinder replacements. Once more and I was getting a new transmission I was told by the dealership.

Older 4.0L as in 2002 seem to hold up better as we had one in as small Explorer. We changed the oil often which may have been key!!

But on these new 4th Gen SUV its a lot bigger, heavier and a V8 is the way to go.

Problems, well it does depend on what you're relating to. If there is no safety certification done as here before it can go on the road again then that can add up. Its hot (much hotter than here) which takes its toll on some parts especially some electronics. The coolant leak should not have been there though before being sold. That was sabby selling like that.

My Explorer 2010 4.0 V6 XLT is in trouble, as am I. When you spend a quarter of your annual salary on what should have been a reliable vehicle from a trusted private seller and it perishes a week later, everything can seem a little hopeless. Googling hasn't helped much with the rising panic. After topping up the reservoir this morning, I drove the 12 minutes to work and the leak was far worse this time. It's now in the hands of one of the drivers at work who will arrange for it to be taken (flat bed!!!! Not driven!) to a Ford specialist. The temperature gauge has not once flickered above normal so I still live in hope that the head gasket hasn't blown. No water in oil etc. Being unable to communicate properly is the absolute cherry on the top.

Please tell us your stories of success, those times you thought all was lost but then you got another 100k out of it. That kind of thing.
:chug:
My 02 went coolant to combustion chamber when the head gasket blew. it would burn a lot of coolant and get hard to start if it sat for more than a day, but it never overheated or got coolant in the oil... until the one time that it finally overheated and the head gasket went the rest of the way.

I'm wrapping up replacing the engine this weekend. I drained 2 gallons of coolant out of the oil pan on the old engine.

I guess that's more like going over the brink of disaster, then winching back up to the top than it is coming back from the brink of disaster.

guess I'm one of the lucking ones. Gotta 2010 explorer 4.0L sohc got it with about 92,000 on it a year ago. Got about 108,000 on it now made a couple of 1500+ miles trips with with no problems. It gets about 18-19 mpg hwy driving mainly. The person who owned it before took exceptional care of it got all the maintenance records when I bought it (not for a dealer but a reputable used car dealer) I've bought our last 3 vehicles from them with no issues other then normal wear & tear. Being a retired diesel mechanic for 30+yrs I'm very religious about maintenance. So hopefully I'll be getting allot of miles out of my explorer. I'm a die-hard ford person myself :)

Thermostat housing is a minor repair to what could of happened if issue was ignored.

All makes have issues. Nissans like new cam and crank sendors, Hondas eat starters and don't get me started on $300+ Toyota brake calipers on 08+ trucks.

Check out my signature link if you want a tale from the brink...... I'm going to pick up an alternator today.
if it's so bad why are you still driving it.......................not the sharpest tool in the shed......maybe

Lol, it's all part of the plan. I was expecting it to last 5 years while I bought a 400k house. Pay the camper off and then a new truck. After the repairs I will probably be about a year later then original expectations. But in all seriousness opinions are like hemeroids, they irritate assholes.

oh no so you will be whining for another year, and I hope your hemorrhoids get better....just joking with you have a good day

"opinions are like hemorrhoids, they irritate assholes." - that's a new one to me, and a good one at the same time :)

Made my day LOL

Hondas eat starters
not if you get the IMA hybrid (CRZ, Insight, Civic). My CRZ hasn't used the starter motor more than once in the last 35K miles.

You got me there haha. I'm mainly speaking for the 02-10 model years so I can keep my comparison apples to apples.

Hey DesertExplorer, how many miles are on your 2010 X ? If you already posted that, I missed it.

for the Tapping, have you had your CV axles examined? What about all the Universal joints?

My wifes 2004 4.0 had 285,000 miles before we got rid of it. The transmission is what is prone for failure (5R55). It was the 3rd tranny. They are designed not to exceed 100K miles. Mine is an 06 with the 4.6 3v. Love it

Sorry to hear, its tough and some of it is bad luck buying a used vehicle with that number of issues although none will be perfect. I try and take the ones I am interested in for a good ride. City and highway, more than once listening and feeling if anything is off. I miss some stuff not paying close enough attention. thats why more than one drive is needed. In a parking lot I do circle 8's which stresses and works the CV joints to the max as the steering wheel it is almost to the max and quite tight turns. Bearing of suspension will pop in the turns if bad as well. I doesn't hurt to have a passenger listen out a well.

Good luck.
