I have a '02 Ranger with the 3.0l engine. I changed the Motorcraft Fine Wire plugs (SP500) that I had installed 100k miles ago. My Ford Owners Manual recommends changing them at 100k intervals.
I found that the 3 plugs on the drivers side of the engine (#2,4,6?) had completely burnt off the fine wire portion of the electrode resulting in a gap of perhaps .100 . The plugs on the passenger side were intact although the gap had enlarged just a bit.
I don't recall seeing this type of "wear" on the first set (original) same part number plugs when I changed them at 100k. I keep a written log book of my performed maintenance and did NOT note anything "unusual" about the removed plugs.
I was real surprised that I had not "noticed" a lack of performance although my gas mileage has declined a slight amount over the past 20k ish miles.
Is this "normal"? Perhaps I should be changing these plugs out more frequently.
Thoughts?
