Air Conditioning blowing through defrost vents

Follow the coolant lines from the heater core under there from the firewall. There will be an actuator that controls the coolant flow for the heater core. I had that one off too. It's sort of behind and underneath the air intake tube behind the air cleaner box. Once you find the heater hoses, you should find it.

So when I have my dial all the way at cold I can hear the blend door motor constantly moving. Then if I move the dial to about 50/50 hot/cold it stops moving around.

Anybody have any ideas on this? I'm thinking the control panel or the circuitry in the blend door motor itself?
 






If the vacuum hose under the hood is not attached, you will loose vacuum when you call for heat. It's more than likely trying to open the valve to let hot water into the heater core. It is set up like the actuators under the dash. The vacuum line for that one originates from the front of the motor and is ran under the air intake tube to the heater hoses about a foot in front of the firewall.
 






I checked the white hose as well as the red, yellow, black and blue and they are all hooked up tight both to the little manifold and to thier repsective motors. I suppose an acutator/motor could have a leak or ???

I ran it through the various modes, up, down, up/down and face and all the motors seem to work correctly.

I'm stumped. :(

I pulled the white hose, and the blower did go to defrost. However, I am in the same situation of not finding any leaks anywhere behind the glove box. I am wondering if there is a minor vacuum leak somewhere in the engine compartment.
 






AC up and down

I'm going to look under the air cleaner box like roush9799 indicated and see if I can find a leak there. All is good under the dash as far as I can tell.

I found it! :chug: Under the hood. Followed the heater hose and guess what is taped to it? Go ahead guess. Right, a black vacuum hose and it goes into a vacuum motor that controls the heater valve right up under the alternator. The black vacuum hose was pulled off the actuator/motor. I must have done it the last time I changed plugs about a month ago.

I did the same thing I guess when I checked my plugs. I found that one off, but it was half my trouble. I also had the white one off. I found the one under the hood by luck. I just started tracing vacuum lines.
 






I used some small zip ties to secure that vacuum hose to the heater hose so, hopefully, in another 75,000 I won't do the same thing when I change the plugs.
 






Here is my fix for the same problem. Might be worth checking into for a quick $15 and 10 minutes.
 






This same exact issue occured in my 2002 XLT: The vacuum component 's arm works fine, but it was the cheap plastic piece that hooked onto the vacuum component 's arm that broke off. The cheap plastic piece connected to the vacuum component 's arm opened / closed the directional flap door.

Hi, can anyone tell me how the plastic piece is attached to the shaft of the blend door shaft?

Same issue as you Dangfield. Need to know a permanent solution for the broken plastic piece. Funny thing is, I thought no I remember hearing it break a few months ago and was like" wtf was that?"
 






The main factor you need to look out for while installing ac is not to let in any dirt or moisture. Also, be careful while bolting down all the parts of an HVAC unit. Although, ac installations can be better taken care of by an Air Conditioner Repair specialist.
 






check the black vacuum pod under the dash on the passenger side. Check to see if the hose is still attached to it. It would be easy for someones foot to knock it off. If it is attached pull it off and start engine and place finger over hose to see if it has a vacuum. If it does you need to look behind the glove box to see if the actuators are working. If no or little vacuum, need to check the lines from the pod to the engine. Mine was pinched between the blower motor and the housing. Hope this helps.

Over six years old but this was exactly my problem. I had seen the loose hose and the "pod" but did not see any fitting for it at first. After reading your post and getting a mirror, I plugged the hose back in and everything works great. Thanks to all!
 






I had the same issue, found the disconnected vacuum tube under the air cleaner box. There is an easily seen/accessible, small, round vacuum reservoir with two connected tubes, one tube had come off, I re-attached it and now enjoy frosty A/C again.


This is what my situation was.. Hooked it back up and works great.
 






I am going to dredge this back up.
My automatic climate control works perfectly fine, as it should, until there is load on the engine (accelerating, climbing a hill, etc.) I can set the vents to blow, but once there is load they divert to the defrost. Once I am out of the throttle, the air returns to the vents. Has anyone experienced anything like this?

Sounds like your vacuum reservoir and/or check valve are not working correctly. When you accelerate you lose vacuum in the manifold and the reservoir keeps the doors from moving. The check valve keeps the vacuum from bleeding back into the manifold.

Sounds spot on. Where is that located?
 






You got me there, I have had no problems with mine. It should be a black globe or sausage under the hood. I have seen some pictures with it under the passenger side front corner. I can look at mine tonight.
Just follow the Vac lines to see if there is a crack, the check valve may be built into the canister as I haven't seen a part number for it.

The check valve is in one of the two vacuum lines right at the firewall. I pulled it loose and it was working so well that it actually hissed as it released the pressure. Bummer, as this really seemed to match my issue. I'll have to check further upstream.
