We removed the PATS box from behind the airbag, and the ring on the steering column before we finished disconnecting the wiring between the body & dash..

I want to do this swap myself, and in preparation i have all the electrical diagrams, ect for the 2002 MY ST form ford. I have pinned out the C110 connector for the 2002 ST and can share with you if you would like. I dont have any info on the 98 MY though

Is the C110 the connector in the engine bay under the fuse box that connects to the dash wiring harness on the inside?!
YES PLEASE!! I've spent the last few days looking for that pinout and what that connection was called so I could ask with more details of what I needed.. I'm not sure I'll need the '98 side as much since I've completely opened up the harness to trace & remove where the PATS pin..

C110 is the one i colored in orange, sounds like you are after the ones in yellow?

Is it easier to just go through the C110?
I thought it would be easier to use the engine bay harness along with the engine harness from the '98 & connect at the yellow marked connections, rather than extending the C110 14" for it to reach the '98 engine harness??

I would just extend the C110 to meet up with the 98 5.0 Engine Harness (C115), you will have to re-pin oneside so they mate properly. Heres a spread sheet with C110 completely labeled i made myself. Sorry for the mess

No need to apologize, I am VERY grateful for your help.. I've said it many of times, I can do the wrench work, but if it wasn't for this great group of people, none of this would be possible!!

Found the returnless rail with the injectors today, I'll also be tinkering with making the 14" extended harness from the C110 as suggested, and making any changes to where they pin in the extension/adapter..

There are still some electrical issues that would need to be addressed, even for a 2001~2003 ST using a 99~2001 Ex 5.0.

((EDIT NOTES: I removed the PATS section because I think I have that covered))

Tachometer:
One wire pin needs to be relocated behind the cluster to make the tachometer read the V8 correctly. Easy.

Vehicle Speed Sensor:

In the case of 98+ 5.0 Explorers, the raw speedometer signal originates at the rear axle ABS sensor and is corrected and output as a square wave from the 4WABS Module. It is sent from there to the PCM, speedometer, speed control, etc. [Note: Early 2001MY ST (probably before 7/24/00) use the same system as the 98~2001 5.0 Explorer. That should make the speedometer work without further modification]

By contrast, the 2001.5 ~2003 Sport Trac takes the raw signal from the OSS sensor on the transmission and the PCM outputs the corrected square wave to be used by the speedometer, speed control, etc.

The 4WABS Module in the 2001.5~2003 Sport Trac cannot make the speed correction like the 4WABS Module in the 5.0 Explorer can. So, simply swapping the Ex PCM into the Sport Trac will leave the vehicle without a speedometer, odometer, speed control and anything else that requires the corrected square wave.

There are a couple of ways around this:

  • Swap in the 4WABS Module and G-force sensor from the 5.0L Ex and rewire to support it. The problem with this method is that the 4WABS in the ST has Electronic Brake Force Distribution (front/rear proportioning done by comparing slip ratios in software) but the 5.0 Ex has a mechanical proportioning valve. Using the 5.0L Ex 4WABS Module in the Sport Trac would leave it with no front/rear brake proportioning whatsoever - not good.
  • Use the Ex PCM and the original ST 4WABS Module and then add a dedicated module just for the speed conversion. Properly wired, a GEM from a 2001 2.5L Ranger will work for this.

I plan to use the second option, but since the '98 has the signal originating at the rear axle, and the '02 from the trans that is no longer there, I won't have any "source" of signal, correct??..
If so, can I also swap in the rear axle from the donor to get the signal for the "dedicated module" from the '01 2.5 Ranger to work correctly?

BUT WAIT!!??!!

It 's confusing because the speedometer setup has changed so many times. I believe the transitions went like this:

  • Ranger Based Vehicles through 94: speedometer cable to mechanical speedo head.
  • 95~97 RBV: signal generator at transmission or t-case to electric speedometer/odometer.
  • 98~2000 RBV: rear axle (ABS) sensor to GEM or 4WABS Module to electric speedo/odo.
  • 2001+: Most RBV's changed to the transmission's OSS sensor for the speed signal source and made the tire/axle correction in the PCM. 2001 4-door Explorer retained the rear axle sensor as the VSS until the major Gen3 change at 2002.

So, I went out to the project '02 ST and found what I think is the vss sensor?!
https://scontent.***c1-2.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/54278358_1232718863553489_4826273102910455808_n.jpg?_nc_cat=107&_nc_ht=scontent.***c1-2.fna&oh=105ff61eb0feaece54b6e1bacb28870b&oe=5D23D57F
And also meaning that I will NOT have to swap in the rear axle from the donor, but I will still need to add the '01 Ranger GEM to read & translate this signal??

Okay, I have acquired a "good" 99+ returnless fuel rail, first one I found had pinhole leaks.. The harness I got with both has trashed injector end connections, so I'll need to replace those, or get another harness..

The reason this build has stalled is due to trying to find another donor, but 99+.. The reason I chose to pause and find another donor is because I'd like to only have two build sheets for this project.. The 2002 Trac that she is, and the 99+ donor that goes in her.. I know I could use any donor and build it into a "99+" however, I am sure that some sensor plugs, some color choices of wires, locations and other differences would arise..

My goal is to be able to use multiple manuals, cut them apart, and make one build manual for the sections related to what is where, so my wife, daughter, dad, (anyone really) would be able to diagnose problems easier.. I apologize for my absence and I am excited to get back to the build.. Stay tuned..

((Teaser, I'm still working on my write up for project DreamCatcher.. '01 on Dana 44's full spooled))

Please don't get excited, have questions, no build progress to report at this time other than more research..
What are the differences between all parts on years 98 through 2003..

Reason for my question is multiple, primarily because I HAVE the '98 donor, hunting for a 99+ donor..
If I rebuild the '98 donor, and wire in an '02 would I be able to use the '98 engine/trans if the '02 fails
((using sensors, injectors, rail, etc. from '02 obviously))
'02 would be ideal, i am hoping to match the PATS to eliminate that situation, before I open a huge bag of wheat just for one grain..

((my current search is '99+ so I can cover everything that needs done, in one shot, just to get her on the street with minimal details that will need further attention other than maintenance.. basically..))
((I am aware that it can be done with the '98, but I am shooting for how it would have come from Ford or even better than, and I am picking and choosing what systems, such as PATS that I want incorporated..))
#nowireleftundone #noboltoverlooked

I'm taking too long just to thoroughly cover "my way" on this build.. I am very sorry to those who expect shop style progression..
At this stage, I want to confirm what parts are different outside of the injectors and rail from 98 & 99..
And for the experienced, who find this thread boring, your question is what mods changes would you add to this project? I am sure that the moment I think I am done with this build, that something y'all have done will catch my eye and get me started all over..
(I'm not looking to lift, this will be a small tow rig, has a 2nd weight class certification in Pa..))

Less important is that while in the waiting stages, I thought about polishing all of the aluminum, painting the block, complete rebuild of the engine I have ((leaked & high miles, needed rebuilt before project ready))..

At this stage without a steady daily and no back up vehicle, I figured the best way to get everything done is to pick up another donor, 99+ that has lower miles, and doesn't leak, toss that in the build, and get everything ready for a part 2..

I believe I have everything to put the build together and will be taking an inventory soon.. Also while in the engine bay, I knew I couldn't leave it as is for final build, so for part 2 the entire build will be dismantled.. Frame blasted and coated, and a full rebuild, from bumper to bumper..

I still don't have any update photos, I know, I know!! The build is still progressing, however, she isn't going anywhere,
(pun intended)..

(Found a 2003 with a 5.0 is that even possible? When was the last 5.0 in an Explorer?! Are any other model that has the Ford 5.0 engine preferable to using the Explorer 5.0??
I have also seen a 4.0 5speed 4x4 2001 Sport Trac while searching for the donor on Copart!!

**Brief complaint about Copart, I can't bid on anything out of the state of PA (need a broker & bs hassle etc.)

Anyway, before this goes from a short story to a book,
Be safe & happy trails!!

Excited to say 2000 5.0 donor acquired!!
Now we have 2 5.0 drivetrains and enough to start making progress.. pictures are on my phone, and will be uploaded the moment I have our PC runnin again..

Donor teardown begins tomorrow ;)
I'll be making an inventory and preparing parts for installation.. I also want to prep the engine bay on Olive, the '02 ST..
I'll be assembling the media and making a comprehensive build thread, this is the discussion ;)
Just wanted to check in with an update on the status of the build..

I have no idea as it is not my truck, but I can find out!!

Driver side motor mount nut is an 18mm, ask me how I know ;)

Going to start on wiring soon, I believe I have most of what goes where. Picked up a nice soldier kit & marine connectors/heat shrink..

Just wanted to make sure y'all are staying safe in this mess, and it took a stay @ home order for me to make progress on this build.. might be it's new name, sounds about 2020

What is the name of your rig?

"Pandemic"

P.s. gonna be upgrading my EF membership to add photos, I give up on host sites & definitely want the pictures in the actual build thread to stay put..

Cheers!!

I suppose I am at the half way point, I am cleaning up the engine bay and wanted to match the bay paint to the exterior color, however at this point I just want to get it put together and will probably go flat black. As soon as I have the ability to get y'all some pictures, it'll put some perspective on it all.. instead of drilling the driver's side engine mount I pulled the good ones from the 5.0 donor. Since I have to pull the front diff to get easy access to that mount, I'll clean what I can get.

Does anyone have a part number on headers for the 5.0 gt40p? I don't have any exhaust parts yet and plan to build my own, so as long as they will clear the 4x4 it doesn't have a y pipe, and gives me more options.

If any of the wiring fanatics are still following this, I'll be moving on and into the harness tomorrow or the day after.

I'm following this for sure
Torque Monster Headers are how you remove the restrictive factory manifolds

I vote match the factory color best you can, always looks better that way

Finally figured out how to upload from my phone, got wheels and tires for $200.. The engine trans, and t-case are in front of Olive, and I've got the '01 pcm PATS, and wiring harness.. I feel like I have writer's block and don't know what should be done first, wiring? So I can climb around the engine bay. What have yall done, and how would you do it if you did it again?!
