Can you replace the 3.5L engine with the 3.7L version without any other changes?

Would this be a plug n play drop in replacement in a 2015 Ford Explorer? Are the engines identical on the exterior from a mounting and integration with the rest of the car's standpoint? If they are physically the same, would you also need the ECU from the 3.7L? Any other electrical connection/sensor issues?

As a direct drop in, no.
The 3.7 is longitudinal and won't fit.

3.7 out of an Explorer PIU, yes, it will bolt right in.

Capacity is close enough that the factory ECU should be able to compensate/learn.
 












Huh? The 3.7 was an option in the PIU Explorers.
This, and that several, like lots, of eBay listings state that they are compatible with the 3.5L version with the 8th digit of the VIN being an 8, like mine is. Not that this is gospel.

Here is the wiki listing on this motor, which shows it as an option in the PIUs.
