5 speed reverse slipping

Did a search for this issue and couldn't find any info on this issue in relation to the 4th gen explorers.

06 4.0 with 5 speed transmission has started slipping in reverse. It's pretty bad, wont go uphill without a struggle and if you give it any throttle it will bounce off the redline. It does however move if you dont touch the throttle.

Anybody know if this can be fixed without getting a new transmission or a rebuild? This vehicle isn't worth putting thousands of dollars into.
 






there is a small chance that the reverse band is loose and could be adjusted/tightened up if its not too worn out.... could be worse I had the ears brake off on my 98 and I had to push it by hand for 3 years because any problems with reverse cost the same as a full rebuild since its the last thing in the case and requires everything to be gutted
 






I had the same issue in my 2001 with a 5R55E. A new valve body cured it.
