1997 Explorer 40L SOHC
We found our 1997 explorer a little run down and needing some work as it was a bit rough in 2014 with the idea on building a large audio show vehicle as we own and run an audio company but life got in the way, but it’s all ways been there first as a daily and school run vehicle then a project.

After funds became available to start collecting parts from around the world, the planning started on the audio system from the large power supply alternators and batteries required to supply the system we had in mind

As you can see this is not going to be an ordinary audio system with this amount of power.

Added alternators? Do you have a write up on how you did that?

Looks like a fun build! Please keep-up the post of progress.

Very cool. I like the filled sunroof hole too, I've wanted to do that for my 93 for years.

The alternators are situated where the AC pump normally is we started by the fabrication of a 4mm steel plate that bolts to the engine using the AC pump mounting holes then it’s a case of measuring and lining the alternators in place and fabricating the loops to bolt through to hold the alternator on to the plate, as for the pulley system we used the old clutch pulley from the AC pump and cut the centre out and welding steel to fill the centre then drill the holes required to bolt onto the power steering pump pulley to make a double pulley so the added alternators run off a separate belt with two belt tensioners to keep everything where it should be

Due to the lack of after market body kits available in the UK for the explorer we had to take things in our own hands and make one ourselves

As the audio in the vehicle is on the large side we had to strengthen the structure after welding the sunroof up we then started adding 30mm(1”) MDF bonding it to the roof a total of three layers where installed type type

the floor is also covered in the same, this gave us the top and bottom of the enclosure we are to build to house the speakers.

As for the final look of the exterior we wanted something that would stand out but not outrageous after looking a vehicle on the road that stood out from the rest we decided on ibis white this is VAG colour used on the Audi R8 and RS models and seems to be a very bright white so we began the preparations for painting

Then it was time to bring the old truck up to date with a custom grill cutting around the moulding line of the factory grill and fixing some plastic mesh and the modified ranger ford lettering

Is your Explorer a Floor shift Automatic? Really liking this build.

Yes, it's a right hand drive, they had a shifter in the center console.

I'd love to find one of those trucks for a few major parts, the dash, firewall, AC units, and the wiring. But those don't end up here much.
