On the piece that breaks, there is a hole inside of the round part. Am I supposed to be putting a rod in there?

The plastic part is pushing the lever to the left or right but then it eventually it breaks. One on the left is original, the one on the right is broke.

I think it is the yellow clips that I am missing. Is that possible?

It is not loose but not overly tight. I think I am missing a rod retainer clip but I am not sure. That is why I need a in depth picture.
