C1233 Front left Wheel Speed issue

no there is no play in the bearings and they make no noise. I am leaning towards a faulty sensor as the culprit here. I was able to get a little look into the bearing at the tone ring and all the teeth are there and with the old sensor still in I have had no faults!

ABS kicks in early, then disabled

As Flag Gibby said you will need to pull the codes, If the lights on the ABS system are on its telling you there is a problem and the ABS will not work until its corrected. It very likely you have a wheel speed sensor that has gone bad.

is it possible to use an external cooler and disconnect the stock leaking fittings?

As long as you have a cooler to use and the transmission has the proper amount of fluid, it will make no difference if you use the stock cooler or an aftermarket one.
