    4R70W separator plate question

mine is still running great. pulled a trailer to Iowa and back with no issues. 1-2 and 2-3 are hard shifts though, some might not like it. It slams from 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd pretty fast. I like it.

Chasing a highway vibration on my 96 Explorer

i have had a bad front wheel bearing cause a shake. It was on a GMC Yukon, similar type bearing. Shook all the way from Iowa to West Virginia and back, good times. Made noise when turning as well. By the time i replaced it it was really really bad....

    Front Pinion Yoke

I found DTS (Drive Train Specialists) in Warren, MI, they knew exactly what I needed for a new yoke. I work near there so was able to go pick up the parts. I had trouble finding the correct yoke online as well. My truck is a 01 Mountaineer 5L with the Dana 35 IFS axle, I would assume the...

    Seafoam

man, my 5L smoked so bad cars had to slow down on the road in front of my house. my dog freaked. it was amazing. my wife said it was so cool watching me appear as the smoke cleared around the truck, she literally couldn't see the truck or me for all the smoke around it. laughed my ass off.

    strange misfire question before troubleshooting

i checked fuel pressure, its 68psi all the time. shut the truck off it drops to 65, then takes overnight to drop to 10psi. was still 10 psi 24 hours later. so i think the fuel pump is OK. truck fires right up, no hard starts, ever. but i plugged the code reader in to clear the check...

    Knocking/thumping noise from front wheel.

i recently redid all the bearings and seals in my front differential, and so I thought I'd put two brand new CV shafts while i was at it. One of the brand new shafts was bad right from the start. it kind of thumped and squealed on the first test drive, my wife said she could hear me coming down...

    smoke from t he engine

I know mine has an oil leak from the valve cover on the drivers side rear. It doesn't leak enough to smoke, but i can smell it. If its dripping oil on the exhaust manifold it will smoke. you might not notice it while the engine is running because the fan and air flow blow it away. Just a...

Suddenly not starting and weird electrical problems

agree with Tom. Mine did weird stuff and then one day the alternator failed completely. I almost made it home.... :) oh, and i had forgotten that my Ranger had a similar problem, the positive battery cable was failing, all corroded at the connection to the banjo thingy. it looked fine though.

    Power Steering Cooler Replacement

i used the aftermarket cooler, left the stock one there and stuck the white plastic things right through it. Aftermarket cooler is sitting in front of the stock one. Its been good for about 8000 miles so far - no leaks!!

    strange misfire question before troubleshooting

Thanks. I wonder about fuel. I have a recent new filter on it, but I don't know the fuel pressure. Be one of the first things I check!

    strange misfire question before troubleshooting

Before I spends a bunch of time....maybe someone else has seen this. I drove my 01 mountaineer to Iowa and back this past weekend, about 1400 miles total. Pulled a uhaul out there, 94F outside, no issues, worked awesome. Drove home through the night Sunday, it ran smooth as silk for 4...

    4R70W separator plate question

apparently no one else has seen this plate either!! I ended up drilling two of the holes in my plate that matched a jmod picture, (I think holes 3 and 4) and removing the lower springs in the 1-2 and 2-3 accumulators. Put it all back together and filled with nice new Mercon V. It shifts...

    4R70W separator plate question

I have the separator plate out of my trans, 2001 Mountaineer, but I cannot find any images like it on the internet, and I have searched. Just ask my wife how frustrated I was.... she left the room. I have searched with many different search terms, and cannot find an image that matches what I...

My 3rd Mountaineer with New Problems

I was going to buy body panels from here. http://raybuck.com/i-67419-1991-01-explorer-rocker-panel-oem-style-4-door-passenger-side.html I haven't bought yet, so I can't comment on the quality / delivery.

    Front Diff Yoke Part number

Having had good success replacing bearings in my rear diff, I went ahead and did the front as well. It was leaking a bit at the pinion and passenger side, and made a wee bit of noise. Its all quiet now and no leaks so far. I needed a new yoke and an oil baffle (behind the inner pinion race)...

    Pinion nut removal

I used an impact gun to get the nut off (maybe you could rent an electric one?) and a 3 foot piece of old garage door opener 't' iron track drilled so I could bolt it to the yoke, and levered it against the garage floor when tightening the nut.

Good fitting catback for 01 5.0

I took my 01 5L Mountaineer to a local muffler shop, they cut out the secondary cats, put in a Flowmaster, and replaced the resonator with a section of pipe for less than $300. Old Merc is still slower than my Honda CRV, burns twice as much gas as the Honda, but it sure sounds a hell of lot...

    Windows quit working?

this happened to me the other day, the alternator was dead and the truck was slowly dying. Windows wouldn't work, then the ABS light came on, then the airbag light came on. Truck ran another 3-4 miles before everything quit!!

    stumbling then suddenly not stumbling

Update on this one. Truck sat for 2-3 months (mama wouldn't let me have insurance on my Ranger and my Mountaineer at the same time) but I recently re-insured it to get it ready to pull my 4 wheeler on a trailer up north. (next week, can't wait) First off, the first day I drove it again...

2000 xlt survived the gauntlet. Going above and beyond..again

Until I saw this I was concerned about pulling a 6x12 Uhaul full of furniture from Michigan to Iowa with my 01 5L Mountaineer.(son needs furniture). I've always had a half ton truck for this kinda thing, but recently got rid of mine so Mama could have the little car she wanted. So my old...

Noise in rear diff - Opinions?

i bought the whole diff kit from Advance Auto. (timken bearings in the kit). Comes with spacers/shims, but I reused the factory spacers/shims, which is normally OK if not changing the gears. Pattern looked good to me when I painted the gears. (I pretended I knew what I was doing) Torque...

Noise in rear diff - Opinions?

having just replaced all the bearings in the rear axle of my mountaineer last weekend, it had a gear 'whine', it was the pinion bearings. I read somewhere that carrier bearings 'growl' when failing, pinion bearings 'whine' and wheel bearing noise changes when you load up one side or the other...

    Tow package, two plugs?

two plugs I just discovered this myself. My 01 Mountaineer has two plugs, one on each side, but they aren't the same. I bought the harness and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't fit, the little pins were in the wrong place. eTrailer comments had the explanation - there are two. Probably...

    whine - fixed

my 01 Mountaineer has had a whine since I bought it 2 years ago, and it was getting progressively worse. It had classic pinion bearing symptoms, and I tried eliminating the front drive shaft to no effect, so I assumed it was the rear diff. I am heading to northern Ontario in a couple weeks...
