    Yeah, it's that black rectangular thing that's on the one in the catalog photo but not on my original. So, what does it do, ring a bell or something if the door's not closed?

    Once it's installed in the door it would be inaccessible, so I don't think it's an emergency handle.

    Found several new replacements online but they all have this black protuberance that is not on my original. What is it for? What does it connect to? Why isn't it on my original latch? Will this new replacement work even with that unknown black thing?
