autohubs

I bought this 94 Explorer a few months back. I took the auto hubs off to clean them because they were not engaging since I put them back on it still doesn't work when I was cleaning the hubs up I noticed the female gear in the hub free spins, is this normal operation or is the hubs toast...

I'm currently stuck in my driveway in 2 feet of snow. The 4H & 4L lights both comes on on the dash when selected & I hear a click a "clunk" but the front tires don't spin at all. Any suggestions? Also sometimes only one back tire will spin. Is this normal?
