Oil smells burnt on dipstick only

I can't seem to find anyone else who has had this problem. I purchased my 2018 Ford explorer xlt 3.5l v6 back in July 2021 with 41,000 miles on it. My husband changed the oil in it at about 4000 miles and used synthetic amsoil 5w-20. Everything was going fine until I started feeling a shake...

    Oil poured out of engine??

Long story, so yesterday I decided it's time to replace my timing chain tensioners before they get worse, I also had a very small leak from my oil pan. So we pulled the old tensioners out, drained the oil, replaced the oil pan gasket, got the oil pan on nice and tight. Put in new tensioners...

    Refrigerant Leak?

I noticed over the years that this part of the AC hose is covered in what looks like oil. It’s gotten worse and the AC feels warmer. Has anyone had a leak in that area before? I’m wondering how common it is. I see the replacement on rock auto for $50 but I’d like to get an opinion before I order it.

    Strange Oil Gauge Issue

My oil gauge is going crazy lately when I accelerate and moves a bit at idle. This has happened before because my original oil switch broke. But after replacing it the problem went away. That was a few years ago. This time my oil gauge is going crazy but only when my battery gauge is low...

    Oil Pressure Gauge Sagging?

Hey nice folks, Thanks for the plethora of information I've already found using the search function. Over 20 years of fandom sure does add up. I wasn't able to find anything that mimics my current symptoms though. I have a 1992 (original motor, 196k miles), and earlier in 2018, the oil...

Burnt oil smell / Oil lamp goes on when full stop

Hi all, I have a Ford Explorer 2007 xlt. Lately I have changed the oil filter and the oil pan gasket. I have noticed that when I drive the car after a few miles it starts smelling like burnt rubber and when I come to a full stop (eg. at a traffic light) the oil lamp comes on and when I start...

4.0 OHV Just Began Using Oil.

I've got a '99 explorer with the 4.0 OHV engine with 252,000 miles. Until I checked the oil two days ago, I've never seen it use any oil. I changed the oil at 250,000, and most of the miles since have been highway. Is there anything that I can do to help it? It's not bad, but if there's anything...

    Oil Catch Can Installed

I installed a 400ml catch can on my 4.0 OHV, since I was tired of finding oil on my IAC every few thousand miles. Is anyone else running one? I can post a list of parts required including hose lengths if anyone is interested. It’s still too early to tell how much oil it’ll catch, but I’m...

    Timing chain tensioner leak

I replaced the left head timing chain tensioner on my Sport Trac, but I didn't realize that it was not threading into the head straight. I removed it and put it in straight with a new washer, and tightened it to the correct torque, my torque wrench could easily be out of calibration, because...

    Massive Oil Leak

Hey everyone! It's bean YEARS since I've posted on here, but I haven't had an Explorer ince I graduated college. I picked up a 1998 4.0 SOHC recently that had a no start due to a faulty CKPS. $13 later I was on the road bringing it to work to shake it down. I've only done a few small repairs as...

Never seen a rear main like this one before...

So while putting timing chains in my 4.0 SOHC I got to the point of every 4.0 when you install a new rear main because it seems like these things go every 100k miles. But when I did I ran into this seal and it looks nothing like the others I've seen. It's got the metal thing around the crank...

Hi all, I have a 1996 Explorer V8 XLT AWD, and it has 206,000 miles. It has had conventional oil changes all it's life, but I was wondering If switching to synthetic would be a good idea. I like the idea of longer change intervals, and better protection, but I'm worried it will start leaking...

I have a 2003 XLT 4.0 SOHC V6 with 210,386 miles on it. The engine starts up great but makes a loud ticking sound. I'm assuming it's the hydraulic lifters and that they are gunked up. The sound usually gets quieter when the engine is warmed up, leading me to believe that it is quieting down...

Oil change on an sloped driveway?

Hi everyone. I really need to change my oil and I'm wondering if it's possible and alright to change it on a driveway that's sloped. It's less than 10 degrees so it's not too steep. Has anyone done this? The oil drain bolt is on the rear of the oil pan so it seems ok as long as I park it facing...
