01 explorer sport 5.0 swap

Hi I have an 01 explorer sport I plan on buying a 5.0 explorer or mountaineer I'm just wondering if I can do the swap with a rwd explorer and use the engine and transmission with my existing 4x4 setup? Or do I have to have entire drivetrain from a 4x4 5.0 explorer?

Yes you can if you convert it to 2wd using the front spindles and brake rotors from the donor truck.

If you want 4x4 then you will need a trans from an AWD truck and then use the AWD t-case or 4406 t-case swap

Thanks for your input. Just fuzzy on one thing do I have to use AWD drivetrains or can I just use normal 4 wheel drive drive train? I'm making it a mud truck I would like to keep the rwd with 4 high 4low if possible. I can find them for 500 everywhere But I have yet to find one awd explorer
