I have a 96 Explorer AWD 5.0 with 190k on it. The vehicle is very sound mechanically, except last week it started shifting hard. I was on a long trip with some big hills, and at first it was just shifting back and forth from OD, which I attibuted to the hills. The next day, when accelerating, it would occasionally have a long hesitation between shifts. Now it has started doing this at highway speeds, hesitating like it is shifting hard, but it should not be shifting.
Is there something minor that could be wrong, or is my transmission starting to go? If the transmission is going, how much should I expect to pay at a decent shop for rebuild? As good of shape as the vehicle is in, I hate to retire it, but do not want to put good money after bad?
Thanks.
