The bearings are shot on my ac compressor and the vehicle is 4 hours from home.

It's cold now and I don't need the AC not do I have the money to replace it right now.

Can i buy a shorter belt to leave out the compressor?

I saw this part: Ford Explorer 5.0L Air Conditioning Compressor Bypass Pulley 1996-01. Is it a difficult thing to change without worrying about the AC gases?

In the past, I have used one on a GM for the same type of problem. However, I did have to disconnect the compressor and hence lose the gas (but most had been gone already). In my experience, the replaced bolted pretty easy thereafter. You might get luck and be able to move the connected compressor back enough to allow it to "ride" there freely but I doubt it.

Normally, you should be able to get a non AC belt to bypass the AC. Not sure about your application. Any auto store should be able to tell you.
