Here are some pictures of the 2002 Explorer/Mountaineer 4 Door.

    Here's the Explorer:
I'm still not sold on it. I think the eggcrate grille just looks wrong. I like the new profile though, but they can keep the wheels.

    Here's the Mountaineer:
I actually think I like the front of the Mountaineer better than the front of the Explorer.

    Here's the interior:
I do like the interior. The one on the Explorer is the same save the alluminum trim. Explorers will have black trim and the Limited will have real wood. Power tilt/telescoping steering wheel included in the memory system.

The truck will have a stability control system and many other high tech features.

    Whats everyone think?

I disagree Stephen, the Mountaineer looks wrong, all wrong!  It looks like a... oh my god I don't know what it looks like! Gross me out!!!! [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG] That is uglier than those GMC Jimmys (I think they are called Envoy) with the big headlights!

The Explorer on the other hand looks great, except for the big honkin' front bumper. The grille is much cleaner and nicer looking than the grille on the Sport and Sport Trac. Very similar to the Expedition and F150 XLT/Lariat.   It is hard to tell from the picture but the rest of the body panels look unchanged (from cowl back).

I like it, distinctive looking. The Explorer just looks like everything else. The front reminds me of a previous generation Isuzu Rodeo. As for the sheet metal, its all 100% new.

I like the new look! I do like the way that the front end looks as far as the grill. Those of us with 2001 need to start harping on the aftermarket world for a billet grill to make the front end look a little sleaker.

I honestly do believe that it is the same from the cowl back except for the taillights and the goofy plastic bumper. Plastic bumpers don't belong on trucks! All in all I think it is a great looking truck (except for the plastic bumpers) and will probably sell like hotcakes! Way to go Ford! :D But Ford please, please, please, please, please change the grille on the Sport and Sport Trac to look like that and do something to get that "cake splatted against the wall" look off of the Mountaineer. Did I mention that I don't like the plastic bumpers?

Boy if Ford keeps this up I am gonna have to start calling these tall-cars and not SUV's. They just don't have that rugedness that I look for in a truck. Course you can't call one of those a truck cause god forbide that you might accually haul something in or on it. It might get dirty... LOL Okay okay... I guess I am just of the opinion that these are all going in the wrong direction. Ah well I don't have a say and whatever I say doesn't count. Other then I wouldn't shell out no $40k for one of those!

The 2002 does look pretty cool (except for those nasty plastic bumpers...another way to save money for Ford and jack the price up for us). I think they have taken a piece from every SUV built and put into their truck. The rear end looks like a Blazer, side panels look like a Jeep(plastic door guards), front end like the Pathfinder, you get the idea. All in all, its the same truck different model. Thats my 2 cents...I'm OUT.

    Tires!

Did Anybody notice it STILL had Firestone's!
Maybe after the recent new's on the Firestone's it might go with a better tire such as the BFG AT/KO! and yes the Plastic Bumpers have to go! (no place to lift with a Hi-Lift Jack)

Off-Road, LOL.. That's sure not in this vehicles vocabulary. Although those mall speed bumps are getting bigger and bigger:D

Am I the only one that thinks it looks like an old Rodeo?

In all fairness to Ford, the plastic bumpers gotta be there. With all the belly aching about SUV bumpers and safety issues etc.

I put off buying a new Explorer because the styling just wasn't there. When I saw the new 2001 Explorer Sport, I just thought it was the best looking SUV ever. Know what? I still do. In deference to those who own these vehicles and to treat them with a little respect as part of this membership, can I suggest that the moderators lead the way?

Yes you probably are Stephen. :D :D I think it looks like a baby Expedition with a slightly different slope to the hood.

And there is no need to have plastic bumpers. Expedition/F150 and Excursion/F250/F350 still have steel bumpers and some of them have those goofy crash bars don't they?

Just saw this article posted on MSNBC about the 2002 public intro. Has another picture, and discusses safety and fuel economy issues. Very interesting read.... http://www.msnbc.com/news/441738.asp
