My son-in-law gave me his 2002 Ranger (3.0 engine) with a weird problem. It will start and drive 21 times, but the 22nd start, it just cranks and won’t start. After removing the negative battery cable, then putting it back on, the engine fires up and it’s ready for 21 more starts. This sequence of events lasted for two months and now it cranks, but won’t start. I’ve read many of the “no-start” problems on the forum, but non like this one. Should I start checking relays, the ignition switch, fuel pump, etc, or am I barking up the wrong tree? I’m a new forum member and a first timer on any forum. Hopefully I explained everything properly in order to get a helpful response.
