I have a 2003 Explorer XLT, and recently my fuel gage has started to act strange. Normally when I fill up the tank, the gage goes immediately to "F" when I start the car up. The last 2 fill ups the gage only goes to 1/4 tank, then gradually works up to "F". After it gets to "F", it will go straight there when I turn the car off and then back on, but it needs to work its way up that first time. Has anyone had a similar problem, or know what could be wrong?

I have the exact same problem. according to the local ford service department, there are sulfur compounds that build up on the fuel sending unit, which lead to the faulty guage readings. They suggested getting a bottle of Chevron Techron fuel additive and adding it to the tank right before your next fill-up. We just did that, so no word on whether it will work. I'll know after the next few fill-ups.

They said they could replace the sending unit for about $350 if the additive doesn't work.
