From "Park" the shifter easily moves into all other gears R,D,N, etc.

But while the shifter moves easily, the transmission does not engage to move the car (forward or reverse).

Dealer said this was a common problem and that a pump in the transmission needed to be replaced, but since they were in there recommended replacing the entire transmission $4,800!

Anyone have this problem or ideas?

PS No indicator lights are illuminated -- check engine light is not on. Noticed the problem happens on cold start, but maybe coincidental. Problem is intermittent -- does not happen all the time.

Sounds right. My mother just had this issue with her Taurtus and she ended up needing a new transmission. Good luck.

$4800 for a tranny ???

Holy s***t !!!

I just want to clarify that the problem sounds right not the price of the repair. $4800 is outrageous. I would definitely shop around.

Hey Zwin, any resolution on this issue? My '06 with 78,000 miles would not engage reverse last night. Forward gears are fine and no lights on the dash. I fear I need a new tranny...

I brought it to a transmission specialist who tested it for several days and wasn't able to replicate the problem. He then did a transmission service ($225.00) in which he took the pan off and replaced the fluids. Problem has not resurfaced, but I've upgraded my AAA towing plan just in case... My problem was a bit different because it didn't go into any gear and there were no problems with electronics at all. Good luck

PS, make sure there's sufficient transmission fluid. There's no transmission fluid "dip stick" on the car though.
