After reading through page after page of threads, I can't find any really good pics/posts of 3 rd Gen CB installs.

I pulled the radio out of my 2nd Gen and I'm hoping some of you will help me find a place to install it in my 05. So, if you have a CB in your 02 or newer, please post some pics. I'd like to install mine in the next few days.

    Thanks guys.

Yeah, unfortunately nobody has posted any 3rd gen installs. Maybe if you look through the stickies for the 1st, 2nd, and 2006+ models, you'll get some ideas that might help. If you do figure out something, please post up some photos.

I spent a few hours yesterday looking through posts. I found one 2006 install that was done in the sunglass holder on the roof. I don't have that so no dice there. As soon as I do get some hits, I'll definately post what I find, and hopefully make it a Sticky with the other Gens.

I've been (slowly) working on ham/CB/scanner install in my '04 X. So far...

    The good -
The plastic door sills pop out and give you a nice channel to run wires.
There's a nice fat grommet in the firewall just above the gas petal assembly to let you run wires to the battery.
130 amp alternator and a 1000 CCA battery from WalMart (fits right in the tray) for lots of power for radio equipment.
Dome lights and C-pillar trim panels pop out so it's easy to snake antenna wires above headliner down to the door sills, then up front to radio. I use body-mount antennas in the roof and not maggot mounts.
Have read that if you replace the double-DIN AM/FM/CD with aftermarket DIN, there's enough room to put a DIN-size scanner in the dash.

    The bad -
Some ignition static, but haven't heard the dreaded Ford fuel pump static. Will try new plugs soon, as there is 55,000 mi on the odometer. No plug wires to replace on a 4.6 (but that might be good).
The factory AM/FM/CD sounds good enough that I'm not in a rush to put in an aftermarket radio, but that's the only way to free up space for 2-way radios in the dash.

    The ugly -
There's all sorts of electronics for the side-curtain airbags, tire pressure mon, etc. above the headliner and behind side trim panels. Don't want to fire an airbag off by keying the mic!!!

Can't figure out how to mount any sort of radio unless it is the remote-faceplate type. Presently have Yaesu FT-7100 faceplate on a metal bracket above the AM/FM/CD. Have a scanner sitting in the center parcel tray, but may relocate it to the bin under center arm rest.

You might want to try a noise filter, not sure if it will work or not.

Bought a new Cobra and a new antenna today. Install was fairly easy. Will get some pics tomorrow in the daylight. It's not ideal, but for the space I have to work with, it will do.

Wow! You've got a heck of a lot of space down there. Nice. I don't have nearly that amount. I like the idea though. I might use that for my 2nd gen. I just can't decide how a want to ultimately mount the radio. Any in-dash mount will require me to use an external speaker, which I then need to find a home for.

Mine was really easy, right when I got the truck I found where to put it. I just screwed it into the that plastic piece just forward off the interior lights in the front of the truck. ran the wires underneath taht plastic, underneath the headliner right next to the windshield, down the inside of the a pillar and under the dash from there. The only problem was that my antenna wire wasnt quite long enough to be fully conseal so the first inch coming out the back of the cb shows, but since its behind the cb you cant notice it. the mic can be inte way of the rearview mirror, but I have mine so that it isn't. looks very nice and very convient to use too. Only prob is its a cheap radio shack one, I just need to get a nicer one when I get money. I will try to get pics up soon, no guarantees though.

EDIT: after rerading more posts, it looks like people may run into trouble with factory optioned wires getting on the way. I had no issues, although mine is just an XLT. I have quite a few options for that trim level, but nothing like a EB or limited would have so depending on what electronic nannys you have you may run into more trouble.

    Pickupman, interesting, nice look.

    Cozmik.
No pics of an explorer sorry but pickupman's console is very interesting.

My only thought is not to use the Rat Shaq In-Line Filter.

    ltr,

    RFI on an Explorer

    Hey guys,

I was a HAM for years (ok I forgot to renew the license)

Here is a great article this guy made on sniffing out an RFI leak, and a choke he made himself for dirt cheap. Oddly enough the leak was at the fuel pump.

    http://97vette.com/sporttrac/rfi_fix/rfi_fix.html

He even tried a few different coils and fabrication techniques before finding one that filtered most of the noise out.

Great stuff... and I never would have guessed!

Yeah I need help too. I got a 2002 Eddie Bauer and there is absolutely no place to mount a radio. I tried velcro on the passenger side of the center consul and it peeled right off on these hot summer days in the south. Anybody got a good permanent mount without tearing up to much stuff by drilling holes and tearing stuff out? I have a Cobra 29 which is pretty big and heavy.

How do you have that mounted in your pic? It looks really good. Did you drill holes or use tape?

My radio is bigger and I am pretty tall so I tried it on the other side on the consul.

^^ Thanks! I drilled 2 small holes. Not sure about your radio size, but I'm 6'2" and I never hit mine with my leg.
