I'm sure it's been covered but my google-foo isn't working tonight....

Will all (especially late model, 07-10) 4.0 SOHC engines interchange?

I know the 4X4 Explorers have a balance shaft and I have read of people swapping non-shaft motors
or disabling the shafts with good results.

I have a 07 4X4 with 220K on it and it still runs great, no noises, never been into. Body, suspension, interior is great and just had trans rebuilt last year.

It would be worth it to me to have a spare, low mileage motor at the ready to swap out when it pops, assume it'll be a chain problem but there is no telling.

Will any 4.0 SOHC long block be OK? Yes, I know I'll have to swap intakes and possibly valve covers and oil pans.

Inquiring minds want to know.... :)

I would like to know this also. My cousin is in need of a motor for a 2010 xlt 4.0l sohc 4x4 automatic. Everything we find says 2006-2010 4.0l sohc works. Why can't an older 4.0l sohc be used?

They theoretically can, if u don’t mind swapping parts. I don’t know exactly what is different but there are some differences.

any 4.0 sohc will work, all the block are the same, I installed 3 of these crap engines in my truck.
the 4.0 sohc are junk. if you are able to to get your hands on a new truck with the v8 you will like that much better.

You can also use a 4.0L from a Mustang. The long block is the same. You have to use your old manifolds and oil pan, however. They tend to be much cheaper than the Explorer motors, so a little work can save you some money.
