4wd problem

Kinda simple here, the lights on the shifter buttons aren't even on. And pressing them still doesn't do anything. Any tips on diagnosing the problem?

3rd paragraph. Read it all the way through and start diagnosing your issue. When my lights stopped coming on, it ended up being a relay.

It's a system, don't just focus on the lights in the buttons.
 






There are a group of wires on the back of the transfer case. There is one pair and a black wire that go into it. When my rig does what yours is doing, I climb under there and wiggle these 3 wires. This has gotten me out of a few pinches. They are showing some cracks and someday I expect I will have to replace these wires. Until then, wiggle wiggle.
