I bought this 94 Explorer a few months back. I took the auto hubs off to clean them because they were not engaging since I put them back on it still doesn't work when I was cleaning the hubs up I noticed the female gear in the hub free spins, is this normal operation or is the hubs toast. Sorry Im new to the 4X4 world and insight would be great.

Not planning on converting to manual would just like some insight

Yes that is normal.

Do not pack with grease. It will prevent them from engaging. especially in cold weather.

Clean em out good then

just a cap full of transmission fluid for lube.

Just to be clear, do you mean when you press the 4x4 button it activates 4wd but you don't feel the front hubs locking, or do you mean when you press 4x4 4wd fails to activate?
