recently picked up a 2002 explorer.
once it's warmed up (noticed after driving a couple hours) it seems the transfer case is binding up a little.. when i make a sharp turn it hear some clunking/bumping and it just feels bad.
I've read a little about a "viscous coupling" but I also understand it's clutch based.. or am i wrong?
anyway.. other symptoms are that the 4x4 and 4x4low lights to the left of the speedometer flash every so often, and when in low range (although low does engage) the speedometer registers a much higher speed than i am actually going (as if it's not compensating for the low range gear reduction)
SO... the question is, as i'm surely not the first one to experience this, what is the fix for it? (other than a new t-case). and if i'm at the junkyard, is there another t-case that is a direct swap? (perhaps a non awd case)?
anything i can learn is greatly appreciated.
