Bad smell from vents

My '05 EX has a real funky smell from the vents when the selector is on vent/fresh air only. If i turn on the AC, smell goes away. Hard to describe the smell, almost like overpowering dryer sheet with a bit of funk.

I ran some Lysol last weekend thru the recirc inlet with AC on recirc. Seems to have helped till today when i left with just the fan on the smell was pretty rough. Turned on AC and smell dissipated...weird.

any ideas?

Max ac puts it on recirculation so your smell is in your engine bay. I have seen valve cover and coolant leaks hit exhaust and smell like you describe

well crap. when i bought it, the oil filler cap had a crack on it and whole pass side of engine was covered in oil. Since been fixed.

I will try to peek in the fresh air box this weekend. Thanks

Weird....popped the cowl and the fresh air inlet had a plate covering it. Looks like I would have to punch it out or something.
