Well, yet another thing fails...... :(

I was hoping the back of my seat was pushed back due to a broken recliner mechanism...........no such luck.

It seems that the seat base sides are buiilt to break in an accident........there are several holes and such in the frame that make it appear that way.....Well, no accident but it broke anyways.......it is broken right in front of where the seat recliner mechanism mounts......

I attempted to rivet a plate between the two pieces to solidify it, but no luck..........

So, what is my best bet??

      a) Try to find a replacement seat (grey, drivers, 1994)

      b) Try to find just a bare seat, remove the old upholstery and replace it with mine

      c) Get the seat base welded...the metal is so fatigued and cracked I don't know if this is doable...I would have to strip off the upholstery on the base to figure this one out........

      d) Try to find stronger aftermarket seats. ($$$$$)

      d) Trade the truck in before something else goes.

The truck has 92k on her, so I guess these things happen......

I have had no luck in the past finding Explorer interior parts around here...........

Is this a common problem?? ANyone see this before??

Would I be able to use the base from the passenger side (assuming the track can be swapped...) ??

      TIA....

      What a bad luck!

I think that riveting nor welding are useless, because those part of the seats is heavy loaded when somebody is seated and any of such repairs last almost nothing.

Maybe you have to make an "harakiri" with your wallet and try to get an used seat, perhaps in a junk yard. You only need the frame of the seat, because the cover and the foam are easily removed and reinstalled.

Im afraid that the bases of the seats are "side designed", so you can't swap it

      Good lock and be patient!

      Thanks...

My biggest concern is that this is a 94 seat.....it could very well be that other 94 (or older) seats have the same problem........I thought if the passenger side could be used, I might at least get a "less used" base....

ANyone know if 95 and up seats will work in a 94??

I am willing to bet these have the same problem...look at how the seat back seems to be tilted toward the outside....

      Thats what mine is doing..........

Was it a direct fit or did you need to make mods to the seats or tracks????

      Update

      Thanks, everyone, for your input........

I found a drivers seat from a 94 4door that had been rolled at 40k miless.....the seat SEEMS pretty much like new, though dirty and wet..........I installed it right at the salvage yard and drove 60 miles home on it and all seems well so far.......MUCH better...BIG improvement..I sit up higher and all........

I am sure my 300 lbs will have me settled back down again at some point.......<grin>

I paid $100 for it (I pulled it from the wrecked one)

The upholstery is in great shape......the foam seems to be like new........

Got it at Wagner pickup/SUV/VAN parts in Harmony PA.......

He has about 10 Explorers out there , different years and styles...

Not ONE unbroken drivers door panel in all of them! <grin>

He did have one that had the JBL kicker and amps and such...How hard is it to pull all the stuffI would need and is it really worth it? I have an aftermarket head unit...can I even USE the stuff???

      Thanks again all!
