Can't start 96 Explorer - Only key fob broken

best thing to do is cut off the metal key part of the existing key, cable tie it to the steering column inside the plastic cowl of the steering column as near as you can to where you put the key in and then use any regular cut keys! i went even further and carefully cut out the small glass chip thats in the keyfob and i taped it securely to the column right where the key goes in.

You can check this works by using any regular cut key in your ignition and holding your existing key right next to the key in the ignition when you turn it over,!

It won't work because the single button fobs don't have transponder (chipped) keys. This is good because the immobiliser can be bypassed with simple wiring.

Immobiliser by-passing

Great re the "simple wiring" by-pass.

Can you give me details please?

Apologies, i wasnt aware of that.

After quite a bit of searching I've come to the conclusion that nobody Really knows how to by-pass the immobiliser on these nor how to re-program a single button Bosch type key.

Looks like I will be selling the Ex.

Make sure you actively post on the US side of this forum just in case something is being missed by us UK lot.

All the info is out there. I have done this personally on two Explorers I've owned. You need to access the immobiliser module behind the n/s rear trim panel. You also need to access the wiring at the tank fuel pump. Once you have access to these the wiring is very simple.

I'd Reaally appreciate a link to the info.
Shame we are at opposite ends of the country.
.
I have a friend (currently on holiday) who is a motor electrician. I'll be contacting him when he gets back from hols.
I know where the module is and I can see the connector pins etc but without a diagram or info it would be unwise of me to go any further.
I have seen elsewhere on the web that the fuel tank needs to be dropped to access the cut-out there.

Thanks, Angus

Some info on my Ex...

It's the original immobiliser system. My Ex has had only one previous owner (apart from the dealer I got it from). The dealer bought it from the original owners widow after he had a heart attack and died.
He was the service manager at the Wolverhampton (Midlands of England) Ford branch and he had just used it as a weekend car. It had 34,000 miles on the clock and what with the first owners job it obviously had a Full service history. I got it about 3 years ago and it's just turned over 40,000 miles now as it's a weekend car for me too.
It's as original as they come.
I like the car, it runs as sweet as anything and starts first time every time.
But I think the immobiliser / keyfob / programming mystery is a BAD idea, probably why the '98 onwards models went to the new (pats) system.
I do have electrical experience but I'm not touching the system, I think it is quite involved and it's all ok at the moment....it's just that I now only have one sodding keyfob which works

Hi, I will dig out my notes regards to wiring colours and pin outs.

If I haven't posted by the time you are ready to proceed then please send a PM or post a reminder.

Cheers,

SS

Thank you SS.
I'll send you a pm with my contact details.
Appreciate the help.

Have emailed my instructions.

Good luck!

:)

Thanks to instructions from Stenasev I now have an immobiliser worry free motor.... :).
It starts just with the key, so no worries about the other keyfob keeling over or being too near a radio mast...both of which would leave me stranded, the former one permanently stranded !.

Many many thanks to Steve for taking the time and trouble to email me the instructions which worked a treat.

:salute:

Angus

My Ex has the later twin button system. I have two working fobs. One with a transponder key and the other is not a transponder key. The non-transponder key will not start the engine. How do I get another transponder key?

Thanks

Have you tried specialist car key copying people?

Angus

Hi Angus

Was not sure if the transponder requirement means it was a dealer only part or whether a ket cutter could supply a transponder key. Hate going to dealers unless I cannot avoid it.

Neil

I know what you mean re dealers prices. I have found my local Ford dealers very helpful re advice though. The workshop manager and mechanics just like to solve problems, the prices aren't their fault.

I would google for replacement car key suppliers in your area.
If your key is the type with a chip in it then they should be able to cut a key and program it for you, or know a man who can.
There is a whole market for that kind of thing now as just about every key is chipped these days.

Hi All

Im sure everone knows this except me. I managed to get a new transponder key from Timpsons (yes, the shoe and key people) on the highstreet. It cost £40 but was worth it for the peace of mind. I am sure it is probably available cheaper elsewhere.
