You miust run with an antenna and you also need to tune it.. If the SWR is too far off you will burn the output of the CB.

You don't need a gigantic antenna, but you will need a CB antenna.

We have a Cobra 29 WX (has weather radio).. its mounted under the dash (under the ashtray)..

    We use a firestick II...

Here is a pick of the shorter antenna I was running. The current antenna is 1ft longer (at least I think this pic has the older one in it... The current (taller) antenna is 3" taller than the tire)

There is a thread in this sub forum (CB) asking people to post pics of their antenna/mounts.. That thread will give you more ideas..

I installed mine and used it twice. Big waste of time and now it's useless. I would advise you to think carefully about how much you will use it. It's a great thing to have if you need it.

Definately get it tuned with a SWR.. If you ever go on a run either to Moab, truck haven, etc you'll need the CB. We often use the CB when wheeling out here on the east coast at Rausch Creek. I remember having a convoy of explorers from All Ford Nationals a few years back and a CB definately came in handy.. Having 10 or so explorers in a congo line is never fun when someone has an issue and everyone deserts them.

    Think twice

Same with me, however I now use it daily... and once you start picking up the lingo, bingo! It will eventually pay off to have it. I also keep a hand held because the car cb is dependent on the the car batt. And if you have to walk away from a location, hand held goes with you.

Also, it depends on where you live. Being there is more freeway/express way here than air, the opportunity to use a cb is always there. :)

One or the other is good to have.

Well, you gotta make sure that you antenna is above the roof of your car, otherwise you won't be picking up any signals. The best place for the antenna is ideally dead center on top of your car so that the signals can reflect of the roof of your car and hit the antenna. But you can place it pretty much anywhere just as long as it clears the top of the car. And no one really uses CB's, a few truckers and people do, but not too much. So, you won't usually be hearing anything. If you have NWR on your CB, you can just listen to that to make sure the CB is receiving signals.

Oh, and channel 19 is the most in tune channel. That's what most stock CB's are tuned for, due to the resonatting of the antenna or whatever the physics of it is, but all 40 channels work, just 19 gets the best reception

The only way to tune a CB is to have an SWR meter..

The swr meter goes between you radio and the antenna wire.. Once you calibrate the 0 on the SWR meter you key the mic and get the swr as low as possible...

I have mine tuned so channels 1 and 19 are really good.. 40 not quite as good..

Thats becuase 19 is most used on the road and the lower channels seemed to always get used when out wheeling.
