Clutch Only versus Compressor Assembly Replacement

I bought a new one, part number YCC223 Motorcraft compressor from Rock Auto. Just trying to find somebody to put it in now.

I've been driving it on quick trips with the AC off and I smell a chemical type burn from under the hood. No idea what it is.
