List the year of your Explorer and the problems you have had with it.

This way we can compile a listing by year of common problems.

We can all learn from this....

1998 XLT 4x2 SOHC Automatic
Problems:
The Engine Recalls
Rear Wiper no work
Radio Display no work
AC is not cold (fixed: accumulator rusted out)
seat recline lever broke (replaced with new design)
passenger power lumbar intermittent
starter had to be replaced (seemed to be premature to me)
passenger side mirror didn't work
front sway bar bushings had to be replaced
rear sway bar links had to be replaced
5R55E tranny died at 74980 miles (cause: sprag clutch)

will update as more arise.

I have a 99 XLT 4.0 l SOHC, and the following have been the “problems” with my ride:

Radio display went kaput
O2 sensor failed which caused the main computer no to yield any codes

No other problems other than standard replacement items such as belt and front brakes.

I have only had my Explorer for 2 weeks now but it was previously owned by my friend and he took really good care of it.

1992 Explorer Sport 4X4 SOHC 5 Speed.

Problems I have found since owning it:
Remote Mirrors do not work. (Not sure yet what the problem is)
Rear wiper works when it wants to (Thinking bad ground is the culprit)

That is it.:)

isotrip unless you have some fancy mods I think you will find you have a OHV not SOHC, .
anyway my 92 , broken arm rest, RUST RUST RUST, door hinge pins ,tranny (previous owner), exhaust leak at header drivers side , hubs on the way out, Not bad for 220,000km.s I guess.

98 Sport SOHC

Differential (existed when I bought it but didn't know until I learned more that there was a problem, covered under ESP)

Auto door lock/unlock Mechanism (a week after I bought it, covered under ESP)

Needed rear driveshaft removed to lube slip yoke causing loud and jolting jerk when coming to a stop. (existed when I bought it..later learned it wasn't normal. not covered, considered maintanence)

Toad....ur mugshot reminds me of Johnny Knoxville hehehee, can I get a witness?

common problems

My ride is a '92 EB 4dr w/164 k, second owner. Rust : rocker panels, dog legs and rear wheel well lips. Around fuel filler door (small dead area above filler pipe where salt etc. accumulates and can't be flushed out), and big time behind rear portion of rockers. Trim pieces on rear doors between big and small windows rusted. Rear hatch window round screws/washers that go thru window rusted. Broken arm rest support. Pass seat back rattles w/o anyone in it. A/C not cold. Front end crunching noise at slow speed, turning. Original radio crapped out. Rear end clunk shifting from d to r and back. Oil leaks from valve cover gaskets. Old oil filter gaskets keep pulling out of filter when removed. Condensation in right headlight housing? Rust build up in rear brake areas. Yellow ABS light and other red brake lights on dash light up. Front doors sag. Other than these FEW problems, it's a great vehicle! (from what I've read, these aren't too bad) Took care of the body rust this year, so my EX looks pretty good again.

1994 Explorer XLT, about 85,000 miles.

I got the car in February.
In June, had the brakes totally redone and replaced.
In September, had the transfer case and the front hubs replaced.
In October, had the brkaes totally replaced again, June's job was $hit.
In November, had the head unit replaced.

According to the guy at the Ford dealership, that's all normal for a 94 Ex with 85,000 miles on it.

1995 Explorer XLT,4x2, Auto, 58,500+ miles

Problems:
This past summer the Cam sensor was replaced, and new rear brake pads. Thats it.

1995ExplorerXLT

1992 Explorer XL: 150,000 KMS
owned since 1996

Water pump replaced
Arm rest broken (ex police- they did it)
New exaust system (1999) original seven years not bad!
Valve cover gasket X 1
AC getting low on R12 refrigerant, needs retrofitting
Transmission seal (not using regular drive pulling up hill) :(

Overall, its not that bad for 9 years old, there is no rust on it and it runs fine with almost no maintainence on it for 4 years (thanks dad)

But then again my family is lucky with cars, my dad still has his 1978 Ford Courier and it has never even had the transmission oil changed, but it still runs fine after 23 years.

2 Explorers

1992 Sport:
5 Speed Tranny @ 90K: Input Shaft Failure
Auto Hubs at 80k
Rust on Rockers appeared at about 80k
ABS Stopped Working at 70k: Fluid was Contaminated. No new parts needed to fix.
Rollover at 102k Fixed Everything ;)

2001 XLS:
Rear Windshield Wiper Relay Went Dead at 4k: Fixed Under Warranty.
Oil Leak from Pan at 7k: Fixed Under Warranty.
Nerf Bar Ripped Off at 10k: Repair is New Set of Rock Sliders :D

99 XLT 5.0
Other than an annoying vibration at speeds above 70, I've had no other problems. It has to be the crappy Goodyear Wranglers, because it didn't vibrate when I had the Firestones. I've had them balanced 3 times.

92 XLT - Owned since mile 0, now 140,000 and change.

Problems considered common to this year:

1)Piece of **** A4LD - 95,000

2)Radius arm bushings - 45,000, replaced with polys

3)A/C - Many times - Almost everything has been replaced/repaired on the A/C system except for the compressor

That's all I can think of right now. There was some other unusual stuff, but I don't have my maintenance records with me right now (I'm in Cali for break, yaaay). The rest was just regular maintenance/things wearing out (alternator, battery, P/S pump, U joints, etc.)

peace

Mike

1994XLT
Thermostat replaced a few times. Auto hubs replaced with manuals. Lift gate bracket recall. Still has the original exhaust... Damn good for 7 years. No rust at all. Runs great. Tranny still good at 150k. Probably because I baby my toy when it's not off-road.
