Hello all my name is Gary and I also do ham radio.
I have wrenched since the late 60's

1st car was a hot rod 63 Galaxy I out ran the cops in my 1st
Saturday night out! Too bad I lived in a small town where everyone
    knows everyone else's business.
I had to go down to the police station
and pick-up 2 tickets with my Dad.
Reckless driving by speeding. Fine $20.
Improper equipment my lights were off. Fine $5

Then came the bad news my pops asks how fast I was going.
The cop replied "well, well WELL in excess of 140 MPH.
Also, I was grounded for 30 days. Dang no driving!
    Boy that car was fast.
So for $25 I became a high school "legend".

I have been certified by Ford,Fiat, Lotus,Saab and GM.

I thank all for the opportunity to help anyone and hope not to
ever step on anyone's toes here.....

Welcome to this forum! Were points added to your license at that time or was it just a fine which is similar to a parking ticket? It was a different time. No red light/speeding cameras or computerized databases logging everything for the DMV or insurance companies. Big brother came true but they were off about the year 1984.

On a side note, I remember my grandfather having a conversation with an elderly man when I was a kid. He said that he was driving for 60 years & never got pulled over or ticketed. This man said that he never broke the law by speeding or running red lights. My grandfather answered him by saying that he never enjoyed driving!

POINTS at 16 when one is indestructible !!! Heck I became a legend in a single Saturday night.
Being deprived of my Galaxy for 30 days was enough. Have you ever lifted factory cast iron FE
headers to change gaskets? Iron was cheap back then.

After moving to Cali in mid 70's I was introduced to fast on the 101 at 2 A.M. in a hopped up
Sunbeam Tiger. Never did Mulholland Dr.

It is hard to get away with much as stated above! It did bring a tear to my eye when a new
cannonball record was set even with all the new cop technology. I guess dope runners don't
    FLY down the road West!

Find old gear heads and get 'em to talk before it is too late
For all the non-hams DE is Morse code for "this is".

I can say one thing in ending, the LORD has saved a stupid person more than once
and I did not crunch any sheet metal.

I didn't have a cool car to drive when I turned 16, but I did have a car fast enough to get me in trouble.

I took my mom's 1977 Impala with it's 305 V8 to what was known as the local dragstrip. The strip had railroad tracks running parallel on one side, and the barbed wire fence of a Naval Air Base on the other side. I wanted to see how fast I could get the car up to. The speedometer only went to 85 then there was a gap, then a 1/2" wide bezel, and finally below that was the gear position indicator. I had the speedo needle down below the bezel and hitting the L1 position :D

I was slowing down when I came upon a cop at the end of the strip. He took one look at the date on my license and said I had to follow him to the police station since my parents would have to pick me up. When we got to the station I called my parents a few times, but no one answered. The officer then told me if I didn't get ahold of them on the next call I would be taken to Cook County jail. I about crapped myself. LOL

Thankfully on my last call my parents answered. Out of one mess and into another ;)

After that I kept most of my go fast activities on the track.
