OK guys, I just got accepted to a dental school after having been pre-med throughout my entire college career. All of my premed "buddies" are now all claiming that dentistry is a profession for MD rejects! I don't get it, I have a 3.9 GPA with a Biology Major and Biochemistry minor and these guys are calling me a reject?!?!? I'm just venting, but I always thought dentists were on the same level as doctors given that both programs are a 4 year doctorate degree and nearly 80% of the classes in Dental school are the same as medical school...I just think dentistry offers more time to raise a family and I think that is very important...and I like dentistry more. :)
DO you guys think less of dentists than you do doctors? Please be honest, I really do value your opinions.

      I don't.
      My dentist is very smart.
He explains every thing in great detail.

My only thing is no one likes dentists.
It is a hateful thankless job.

Best of luck though man !!!

Very true my friend. I really like my dentist...except when he starts probing and poking!!!

Exactly!!! I think medicine has become so stressful for many MDs that the actually practice is no longer enjoyable. Many MDs complain about insurance fraud and malpractice lawsuits and I can't say that I blame them. I think it would be impossible to love a job where insurance is constantly screwing you AND you have to probe someone's butt!!! EWWW. :thumbdwn:
I'd rather examine the entrance than the exit.

LOL. I never understood that. I guess many people go into it just to make bucks even though they despise dentistry as a profession...

I think of Dentists and doctors are pretty much on the same level.

In fact, I think a dentist is probably better than a general doctor because he/she has a much smaller area to specialize in.

I hate going to either though.

But, dentists make just as much money as doctors do, and there is probably alot less stress and insurance is probably cheaper.

I prefer my dentist over my doctor. She has smaller hands and is more gentle.

Let your friends rib you all they want. You can have a good time laughing at them when they're working 20 hours a day and you're working 9-5... and who cares what they think if this is what you really want to do?

I think they definitely get less respect, kind of like veterinarians who have to go through the same amount of school but for more than one species of patient.

It all stems from the joke. Ever see Seinfeld? The 'what do you call a doctor who didn't make med school' was even on an episode. I wouldn't worry one bit about it.

My doctor and my dentist actually live in the same development. Judging by the size of their houses, I can't really tell a difference in their lives.

As for stress, you'll probably live much longer being a dentist. My girlfriend is taking her MCATs in the Spring with the hope of going to med school. I keep reminding her that it's 4+6-8 after her undergrad education is complete until she will have some slight experience of a non-stressful life. And if I am not mistaken, doctors (ironically) have a shorter lifespan than the population as a whole.

If I were you, I wouldn't sweat it at all. I would, however, make sure you do a good job. I'm going into law school this fall coming, and upon graduation, I'll be happy to make a quick buck doing a personal injury case. Hell, you gotta pay off those bills somehow! :)

      Good luck with everything, RedEB.

Who cares what your friends say? At least all you have to see are peoples' mouths. Dentists make real good money and work normal hours. You can't beat that.

My Uncle is a very busy orthodontist, makes no where near 900K after overhead.
If you go into medicine for the buck your a fool in this day and age.
Plastic surgeons and dermatologist make big bucks, no on call, no ER crap, mostly all cash pay direct from patients, very little insurance company garbage.
cardiac, Neuro, orthopedics, and your in the Hospital 24/7, always on call, no family life, no time, no bux anymore

Thanks guys! It just gets so annoying when some snide pre-med comes up to you and says, "Why aren't you going into medicine?" :fire: BUT, like you all said, I think I would rather enjoy what I do AND have a family life!!!
BTW- I did see that seinfeld, it continues to haunt me to this day. ;)

My brother is going to law school! Everybody says that we have too many lawyers, but I always remind them that we too few of the good ones. Good luck to you in law school, we are in great need of good personal injury cases...it keeps us dentists shooting straight. :D
I think enjoying what you do is more important than any stupid "prestige" value that someone arbitrarily establishes! Quite honestly, my hardest molecular classes are easier than working on my X, yet mechanics aren't regarded as prestigious as the old MD. No job is easy and everybody is simply better at certain things, I just wish people would drop this whole prestige crap and actually pursue careers that they are interested in. I have known soooo many pre-meds drop out in their first year of med school because they realize they hate it so much...

Adam- Good luck to your gf, the MCAT is a truly daunting test! Here is a website that has really helped me out with the entire application process:
      http://forums.studentdoctor.net
Where are you going to law school?? Best of luck to you!!

There is so much to live for, and I think you hit it on the head Spindlecone. Living life in a hospital just isn't living if that is all you do.

Pediatric neurosurgery?!?!? That would be depressing, but I'm sure lucrative. Still, I couldn't imagine losing a child/infant in brain surgery, that would be very hard to live with.
