Or does it cause you to get more spam? I used to just delete everything, then for a while I tried unsubsribing from them all. Now I seem to get even more, particularly the ones for free porn passwords.

No, I've unsuscribed to millions of those, somehow I got on the lists, and even though they say they'll remove you they never do.

legally they have to remove you if you unsubscribe, problem is theres now law saying that they can't put your name on another list. What that means is you'll get put on a "verified email" list which they'll sell to two dozen more companies. I just delete it, every now and then I change my email address, LOL.

NO. Absolutely no. Never ever ever respond to those "Remove" links. All that does is verify that you have a live address. Then they will put your e-mail on a "premium" list of addresses that are considered active, and sold to many other spammers. Either delete it right away (don't even open it, as some use Java to send a verification without even reading it), or forward it to the Federal Trade Comission at UCE@FTC.GOV

The best thing to do is block spamming email addresses, or complete domains (the part of the addy after the @). The unsubscribe links do not work for getting rid of spam.

I also have filters on my email account that for instance send all messages with "credit", "sex", "mortgage", etc to my junk mail folder.

Clicking on the remove from list deal will get you put on more lists...

With all my business and personal e mail addresses, I get over 1000 spams per day. I have yet to find a suitable way to stop it.

I have a serious problem too. I get anywhere from 1 to 2 hundred new emails each day. 20-30 from this board, 2 or 3 from people actually emailing me, and the rest junk. I don't even know how so many places have my address, I've never given it to a porn site or a bank site. (the kind of sites all the junk comes from)

man I thought I got a lot! Not sure what to tell you, but you must have gotten signed up for them somewhere... I get about 50-75 a day, about half of which are sorted out by my filters I have set up (which blocks anything with porn references, etc. unless its from someone I know, LOL)

I noticed you have your email address in your signature.
Unethical webcrawlers will walk a site like this and record all email addresses it finds. Any site that you have your email address showing on a webpage can be found by a crawler that can make a list and give it to the spammers.

Yeah it is a lost cause. I tried fighting them at the office by putting filters in and it was just one after another, I did install this software(I forget how much) but it is Called Praetor and it helps fight viruses and junk mail. You can block domains with it and set up various rules. It took care of the bulk of it but some still comes through. It subscribes to this ongoing list called the internet blacklist and it blocks everything on that. The other option would be to block everything and just set rules for the messages you want.

    Try this site.

If you have a web site and can spar some server space, try this web site. We can all do a little part to help stop these harvester bots.

    http://www.spywareinfo.com/harvest_project/

It shows how to set up a fake page with many fake addresses on it, which will cause the spammer to send out tons of mail to tons of invalid emails. These will all be bouced back to the spammer and make his/her life more difficult. Fight fire with fire. It may even cause so mauch traffic that the spammers ISP will close the account. If you can, join the Harvester Project.

Hey John - I see you change your signature to have a link with your email address. Well, the webcrawlers will still get your email address from the link. Don't put it in your signature at all. This forum software has an email form link at the bottom of every post. The webcrawler can't get your email address from it, and people can still send you email from using the form. Thank Rick for using such good forum software on this site.
