Open the rear hatch and slam it shut. I've gone several rounds with the '93 we had. The rear door seemed to be shut, but wasn't quite. Extremely frustrating problem. Somebody with an Explorer has a post with the same problem and someone suggested that the plastic/nylon sleeve around the piece that the door latches close around can cause this problem if they're cracked/broken/missing.
