I absolutely HATE having things running in the background! I've got WinXP and, every time i open Outlook Express, windows messenger opens in the taskbar. Is there anyway to eliminate it completely? I don't now, nor will i ever use it.

      Click Start - Run

      Type the following line:

      RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

This will remove the msn messenger from XP. A great site to find things like this is www.tweakxp.com

I hate that too. It won't let you close it because it says "it's part of some other program running" or some BS.

Typing that line won't kill anything else? :D

It shouldn't. If your computer starts smoking after you type that then it's not a good sign. :D

I tried it and it works like a charm. No smoke, either.

That bugged the heck out of me too. To remove Windows Messenger do the following:

      Control Panel
      Add/Remove Programs
click Add/Remove Windows Components (on the left side of the window)
      uncheck Windows Messenger box
      click NEXT

Restart your computer and no more Windows Messenger.
