I have searched a bit, but can not find a thread with my exact symptom so hopefully someone has some insight.
I have a intermittent but serious grinding in the front end. It is 1999 sport OHV 4wd/Auto Automatic Trans, bone stock. The grinding occurs whether the vehicle is in 4high or Auto. It occurs at various speeds but always goes away before I can get to a place where I can get the vehicle up on jacks. The sound is metallic and has a bit of ring to it. It happens in a straight line or while turning. Can go weeks without it happening then suddenly it is very serious for a mile or so. The sound seems to be either passenger side or center of vehicle. The grind is serious enough that you can fell it when it occurs.
There are no signs of anything rubbing, dust shields are not touching calipers etc. I have never heard of a hub, CV, or transfer case issue being that sporadic or intermittent.
