As I mentioned in a few other threads, not sure about Truckheaven. A fellow club member (Axlesnappers) was the one who died there at the TDS Safari in May. Kinda changes things. I'll keep my eyes open and try to join in on some of the loacal runs.

Ya, it puts a damper on visiting that area for sure.

I friend was just asking me somequestions about getting his Technician class license and I noticed that they dropped the requirement for code on the Extra. Guess I'll start studing for that now.

Yep, a while ago. I upgraded from Tech to General pretty much as soon as that happened. I haven't upgraded to Extra yet, but it's on my list!

Hi all! I'm a new HAM and Explorer owner. I'm currently researching how to cleanly (read: close to factory appearance) install a VHF/UHF rig into my X.

I'm in Tampa....looking forward to meeting other local HAMs.

Welcome Alex! I'd recommend looking into a detachable face radio. That'll allow the cleanest install I think, since there aren't a lot of open spaces in the Explorer to mount the whole thing in the dash (plus the heat generated).

Went to an air museum in Valle, AZ today. We toured General McArthur's Constellation which had Colllins and Hammarlund radio gear. Cool stuff!!

This how i did my setup in mine.
    I have a Kenwood TM-D710a
The base part is mounted on the pass side kick panel under the dash.

This is how I install my 4 Antenna.
and yes i drilled 4 holes in a $19,000 truck LOL :) i keep them till they die.
    used good RG-8x Coax.
NMO mounts, think holes so i could add fender washer for stability.

From two are for 2 Dual Band 2m/70cm, Back left is CB, Back right is just a 2m for now but its for when i get a HF rig in there. :)

Wow! Very nice setup. I'd be afraid to do that, and I already have kept mine until it tied, and then some. ;)

    New member old(er) ham

Just thought I would poke my head in here to introduce myself. New member on the forum and moderator RICK directed me to this page.

Been a HAM operator for years been kinda out of it for a while but still have my VHF handheld rig. Some nice equipment out there.

Glad to be part of the site and see other amateurs on here too.

    AB7FH is on the air!!

After 7 years I finally dug out my old trap vertical, and put it back together. Had to spend $22 for 6" of aluminum tubing that I lost... I could only buy 8ft!!

So... I'm good to go on 10-20-40. Anyone want to QSO??? Let's set up a sched!!

Cool! I've been down for a while myself. Got one antenna for 20 in the attic, but it doesn't perform very well - pretty noisy. I finally got the dipole back up outside, but I don't have it run to the radio yet. I've also got a vertical, in a pile under my deck, that I need to get back together. I bought this thing a while back at the hamfest, but haven't set it up yet - but need to:

Simple idea, and easy to put up and take down.

Should be doing well were in a up tick on the solar cycle and the E layers are coming together earlier in the evening allowing for more propagation. I just wish I had the footprint on my property to put up a 40 or 80m 1/4 wave but just not enough room :(

I'd put up a tower next to my garage but they run the telephone wires down the back of the houses here and on the street in front is a large transmission lines which causes lots of interference in SW bands.

Oh well still have the VHF/UHF or could go mobile.

    Enjoy the QSO

Hi David! Sounds like you need to expand your ham operation. ;) That's the great thing about the hobby, there are so many different interests, and it's always there when you get time again!

I'm sure glad I didn't sell off my HF gear. I had contemplated it a few times over the past several years.

So who wants to set up a QSO? Time to reactivate this thread :D
