I almost forgot. I do have a Baofeng UV-5R also. I won it as a Field Day door prize in Dillon, SC the day I went to take my General exam. Use it for GMRS and HAM.

You'll have to let me know the repeater info in the Shaver Lake area when you figure it out.

VERY NICE! In your experience are the tone and offsets accurate? The couple times I have tried to use repeater directories in the past the tones were never correct.

What little I've done with it, it was correct. Between this and CHIRP software, it makes life so much easier..

Another great link. I have a Yeasu VX-7R and am looking in to one of the Baoe..... whatever HT's. I see this program looks like it will work for both of them.

Hi all, I'm new to these forums, but I've owned a 2000 Mazda B3000 before and now have an '02 Explorer. I'm a ham, and I just got my General ticket. At the moment my only Explorer setup is a cheap little Baofeng and a 2 meter mag mount my dad gave me. Looking to upgrade to a better HT or possibly a mobile radio. I have an Icom IC-718 coming right now for home.

Welcome to the forum! Sounds like you've got a good start. 718 is the radio I have. Can't beat it for the cost! For the explorer, consider a yaesu or Kenwood, single band. You can get one new for under $150 usually. I have an older 1802 that I picked up for $125 new. Can't beat that!

Successfully upgraded to General last night. Now i can talk on my new to me IC-746. I have made a few 1:1 baluns for 40 and 20 meter dipoles. I have also made a copper pipe vhf j-pole that works very well for under $20

Congrats Jonny. I found it reasonably easy to make the step to general. Then I started studying for the Extra....... No thanks!

You should have done it my way with the morse code requirement...20 words per minute ain't for sissies. :D . THEN I had to pass the theory stuff. For a guy with a BSBA (business) degree, it was all Greek to me.
