I just got done switching my computer from XP to 2000 (it runs a million times better this way :D ) and installing mandrake 10.1 on the PC at my house that my mom and sister use solely. I switched their computer (and it was a small pain in my rear) because i can't trust them and got sick of removing adware and spyware off of it. my sister managed to get something called webrebates that managed to block all internet access (i dont know how this is beneficial to the makers of the spyware) and refused to leave. I get home from school and hook up my PC in place of theirs (after switching it over) and after a few minutes, a window comes up that says "thank you for installing viewpoint media player, would you like to check for updates now?" could it have come from AIM? :thumbdwn:

nice fresh new install, raped :fire:

      This is what I found.

"Viewpoint was bundled with the new version of AIM"

Use Adaware or Spybot to remove it.

      You definately don't want it.

i got rid of it as soon as i saw it, it also managed to bury itself nice and deep in my registry and tried again when i uninstalled it (i love adaware pro :) )...this was more of a rant of my dealings with adware in the past week

I got tired of the adds in aim so I un-installed it.

If you use linux than you should know about gaim. Gaim is availible for windows in case you dont know. Looks & functions exactly like the linux version.

      Heres the link:

      http://gaim.sourceforge.net/downloads.php

      You would want version: gaim-1.1.0.exe

They make it like that to punish you for whatever you've done. Some will only let you click on what the force you to look at. Now why the hell are you gonna buy something you're being FORCED to look at. The pr0n industry has program writers that attach adware certain links, then it changes your homepage to where you can access the internet. They could care less if you can't access the internet, they are just teaching you a lesson to try to make you pay for the pr0n.

Yup explorer will be the death of your computer. Get Firefox 1.0 from www.mozilla.com. Its fast, easy to install and you wont get stupid popups or spyware. Netscape is also alright but i found after AOL got Involved with it, it was packed out with adds.

      Its not just me either

Yup it won't work on sites with poor HTML (people who cant code) IE overlooks so many HTML problems so the user never sees them..... Mozilla does not blow smoke at the user.

there are some web sites that are just not compatible with other browsers, for example some discussions forums that are coded in asp.net only render correctly in IE and it has nothing to do with poor coding. For example I gota use IE to sell anything on ebay cause using opera, it wont let me upload pics directly to ebay's servers.

I've been using AdAware, Spybot, and Bazooka spyware scanner on my clients' machines. Seriously, look up Bazooka at kephyr.com. Each of these programs target different things though, but I like Bazookas approach.
